William Terry Obituary

TERRY, William Herman, went to be with the Lord on May 9, 2023. Bill was born May 31, 1947 to Hilda A. and Frank D. Terry, who predeceased him. He was also predeceased by brothers, Marvin D. Terry and Bobby Terry. Surviving is the love of his life, Denise B. Terry; siblings, Louise Williamson, Linda T. Motley (Ronnie), Mary Ellen Adams (Larry); also stepchildren, David F. Barker, II (Ashley), Mary Ashley Montgomery (Ryan); nephews and nieces, Timothy Motley, Marvin Stultz, Frank Stultz, Kim Baldridge (Doug), Christy Smith (Casey), Jessica Weaver (Chris); stepgranddaughter, Lila Ann Montgomery (who absolutely adored her PaPa Bill); father-in-law, Howard M. Barker; brother-in-law, Todd Barker (Susan), sister-in-law, Christel Barker; his sweet dog, Bentley that helped him so much during days he wasn't able to walk; three very dedicated friends, John B. Scott, Steve Goff, and George Cobb (Ty). Bill was a dedicated servant not only to our country but our state of Virginia. Bill served in the United States Army from 1966 to 1968, having served a tour of duty in Vietnam (1967 to 1968). After returning from Vietnam, he was hired by Virginia State Police in 1972, retiring in 2004. During his time with Virginia State Police he rose through the ranks, and upon retirement he was serving in the rank of Captain. Bill was extremely proud of his service to the state of Virginia, serving in Mecklenburg County as a Trooper, Fredericksburg as Sergeant, New Kent County as a First Sergeant, Safety Division, Salem Division, and Internal Affairs as a Lieutenant, CJIS Division and Richmond Bureau of Field Operations Division One as Captain. Those who know Bill knew that when he wasn't working, he would be found on one of his beloved golf courses with those dedicated friends. Bill was not one who liked to be made over so if you would like to do something to honor his memory go play a round of golf, or take that someone special out for a great dinner and enjoy each other's company, or take a day and go to your local Veteran's hospital and visit with a veteran in his memory. The family is extremely appreciative of all the support given by the Veterans Administration, we will always be thankful for everything done for Bill. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the American Heart Association, American Kidney Foundation, Virginia State Police Emergency Relief Fund, or a local animal rescue group. A memorial service is planned for Tuesday, May 23, 2023 at Calvary Christian Church, 14196 Ashland Road, Glen Allen, Va., visitation will be at 10 a.m. with service beginning at 11 a.m. Burial will take place on Wednesday, May 24, 2023 at 2 p.m. at the Amelia Veterans Cemetery, 10300 Pridesville Road, Amelia, Va.

Family, friends and troopers, i grew up knowing Herman and his family in Spring Garden, VA. He and his siblings were always kind, quiet and hard working. He has shown great achievements in his life by the promotions to reach Captain and the accolades of a leader. May Almighty God bring comfort to all of you during this time of bereavement. In sympathy...Charles Adams (neighbor down the road on 640) Belmont, Reidsville, NC.

Herman and I became lifetime friends after meeting in Farmville, VA at Girls State at Longwood College in 1975. On several occasions we crossed paths while being promoted. On one occasion, he asked that I call him Herman. During the remainder of our friendship, I called him Herman. I was saddened by his passing and the sickness he experienced. RIP my good friend, Herman.
