Your Mom was a delightful woman and will truly be missed by her neighbors, here in Point-O-View...especially at our ladies summer "pool" lunches. It was such a treat to run into her, somewhere, shopping...or in the neighborhood...always greeted with a pleasant smile. Now we will celebrate her and be grateful we had her in our lives.. Peace be with the family. She is now rejoicing with her heavenly family...Blessings, Suzanne & Ed Owens

Camille Babcock, mom, was born February 22, 1929 in what is now Harlem. Her mother, Mary, was a first generation American, born to Italian immigrants. Her father Francis was an Italian immigrant who entered the United States through Ellis Island.
Mom's early life was that of poor Italian immigrant family living through the Great Depression. Yet they were wealthy in family, friends, and love.
Francis worked in bottling plant and then on a trash collection crew. Francis died of illness when mom was only 12. He left behind his wife, oldest daughter Clara, son Tom, and mom.
Clara went to work to support the family and with the help of family and friends they got through some tough times. Growing up we heard colorful tales of our grandmother brewing in the basement during prohibition, relatives rumored to be involved in a certain Italian organization, and mysterious boxes that showed up at Christmas time with toys and gifts. Many stories with a common element of people helping each other. A theme that was fundamental in mom's life.
After graduating from High School, mom went to work doing clerical and secretarial work. While working as a secretary at RCA Radio Marine, mom and her best friend Nancy went to a USO dance where she met a dashing Naval Lieutenant, Donald Babcock. After a short courtship, they were married in October 1957 and mom began life as mobile Navy wife, and shortly after, mother.
In September 1958, her first son Donald was born in Bremerton Washington. 13 months later Tom was born in Oakland California. And 6 weeks after Tom was born they were all moving to England. After returning to the US, David was born in New York in 1964. Shortly after, they all moved to San Diego. Two years later the family was moving to Jacksonville Florida, but they were diverted mid-trip to Norfolk where things settled.
We all experienced the great fortune of having a mother who was dedicated to raising her family. We never experienced the hard times in childhood that formed mom's values and beliefs, but she instilled them in us by example. Mom kept it all together through long deployments when dad was away, and the year he spent in Vietnam. Times were different then with regard to instant communication and material desires. Mom wrote a letter to dad almost every day when he was in Vietnam and always made sure we stayed aware and connected to him. We were well cared for, happy, and needed nothing else.
Mom was an Italian mother, trained by an Italian mother. She could cook. She loved feeding anyone. Holidays were special delicious feasts served on an impeccably decorated table. Any Italian kid will tell you their mother's spaghetti sauce is the best. They are wrong. My mom's was the best.
Chicken soup was another specialty and simple evidence of mom's generous, giving, and caring nature. If you were sick, you could expect a big bowl of the Chicken soup penicillin. Mom would often comfort sick fiends, and in one case, a friend dying of cancer would only eat mom's chicken soup. Once, upon hearing the magical pasta ingredient could not be found locally, 15 pounds of it was delivered to her by surprise from Amazon.
Mom, Aunt Clara, and Uncle Tom were in awe and extremely grateful at how comfortably they lived in later life compared to their childhood.
Mom loved her family and friends more than can be expressed. A rare, genuine, good person. She was active and full of life, nicknamed the Energizer Bunny. It was not her plan to leave us last week.
While we were not ready to loose her, we know she did not suffer and she is now in the best place possible, reunited with Dad, David, Uncle Tom, Aunt Clara, her parents, and many many friends that are already there.
Thank you for being my mom and best friend.

Camille was a lovely lady that always brought fun, kindness and sunshine wherever she was. She was an integral member of the longtime aerobic group that became more than an exercise group they became close friends. Her memory will live through our many wonderful memories of her. We will perpetuate her spirit through thoughtfulness and acts of kindness in her memory. My thoughts and prayers are with her family.
