My life is different after Dave´s passing. I met him in the late 1980´s when Beth and I came up from Fort Lauderdale for a summer at Split Rock, and I have grown over the years to treasure his friendship dearly. I regarded him as close friend who showed great consideration and loyalty; an exceptional businessman whom his staff worshipped; a proud father of Katie and Christine who would do anything to help them; a generous contributor to many causes around the lake; on and on....
Examples: The timeshare staff were more like his family than his staff; he always had an open door to all; when he wanted something from a vendor, they always seemed to put Dave´s needs first; when he referred a few of his vendors to me, they called immediately and extended many favors; when he had to shut the timeshare down, he did it compassionately and helped those he could to move forward with their lives; when the Resort asked him to reopen the timeshare from nothing, his former staff eagerly came back, because it was Dave. He rebuilt the organization from dead stop to seven-figures per month revenue in two months. Leon Wasko was a senior staff member who died early; Dave put his wife on staff, both before the shutdown and when he re-built it. I could go on and on....
People constantly came to him for donations or favors and he almost always responded; I guess they regarded Dave as a "soft touch" but he knew that and enjoyed it. One morning he lit up with tears telling me about a young employee who asked for three days off so she could drive to Pittsburgh and donate a kidney to save a stranger´s life, because she was told she was the only person the hospital could identify with the right blood type; the thought of her generosity overwhelmed him. In all these examples, Dave displayed his true character, in so many ways no one could ever deny it.
Dave and I both loved Florida. I owned a rental house in Stuart, near Palm City where Dave had various residences for decades. We both loved boats, and we both enjoyed sharing details of our various acquisitions and experiences. Dave had an oversized photo of a 37´ Sea Ray Express Cruiser on his office wall, his favorite boat and one I test-drove a few years before but couldn´t afford; we talked many hours over many days just about that boat. We had both boated to Bimini, and we both knew the intricate inlet channel from memory.
Katie also loved boats since her early years. Dave enrolled her in Stuart´s Chapman School of Navigation in her early teen-age years, and on her 17th birthday she took and passed the test to get her Captain´s license; I´ve called her "Captain Katie" ever since. When Katie had a condo in Fort Lauderdale for a while, she used to bring her young friends up to Stuart to go boating, when Dave was at Split Rock. He trusted her implicitly and as far as I know she never let him down.
Equal airtime for Christine! One summer my teen-age nephew Carl from Germany was at Split Rock and wanted to learn to water-ski. Christine was same age, so I invited her to come along as my Spotter. Carl tried mightily but couldn´t get up on one ski and had difficulty getting up on two. He eventually gave up, and when he got back in the boat he asked Christine if she skied. Christine demurely said Yes, then popped up on one ski and gracefully looped the lake three times.
Jack Kalins had a vision of Split Rock as a major destination resort with golf, a major hotel, premier restaurants, and many related amenities; and only two hours from NYC and Philadelphia. When Jack bought the resort in the late 1970´s, Split Rock was a pleasant but sleepy summer cottage community with a past of repute but not much future. To implement his vision, Jack needed money, and Dave´s timeshare operation got it for him. If you like golf, fine food, upscale retirement homes, +++, timeshare revenues paid for it all. Dave made the money and Jack spent it, I believe in a wise and tasteful way to create Split Rock as a very special and inviting community. Together. They both shared Jack´s vision.

Having had a few days to agonize over the un-timely death of David, I am still at a loss over his untimely passing into eternity. David was a good man, who also had great faith in the Lord in his own way and always put his family first. I believe he shaped the lives of his children with the strength of his Love and will greatly be missed by those of us he left behind. REST IN PEACE IN GOD's ARMS MY FRIEND. W. Jack Kalins

I was blessed with us presence.

Dave was a very kind and generous man. I could talk with him for hours. He´d had a full life and had done so many things. He loved his girls and was so proud of who they had become.
My condolences to Diane and the girls.
He will be truly missed
Rest In Peace brother Mason.
