MOUNTAIN TOP — John L. Konopczyk, 79, of Mountain Top, passed away on Friday, Oct. 23, 2015, in Celtic Hospice at Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre.
He was born in Wilkes-Barre on Aug. 26, 1936, a son of the late Joseph and Bridget Mazur Konopczyk. John was a 1954 graduate of Marymount High School, Wilkes-Barre. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Korean War.
In 1959, he married Leona Plesnar and together they raised five children.
For many years, he owned and operated Valley Service Station. Musically inclined, John played saxophone and clarinet for many happy occasions in the polka band, The Merrymakers.
Prior to retirement, he was an insurance adjuster for Farmers Insurance.
John was an avid hunter and ice fisherman, and was happiest when holding court in his garage with his sons and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Leona; and his children, Dr. Janet Halsey (Bill), Mount Airy, Maryland, Tom Konopczyk (Debbie), Harleysville, Jack Konopczyk (Jill), Mountain Top, Andrea Gerko, Forty Fort, Dave Konopczyk (Kelli), Cedar Park, Texas; and five grandchildren, Andrew, Gabrielle and First Class Airman Ryan Konopczyk and Mia and Brennan Konopczyk. He is also survived by sister, Veronica Hohol, Kingston; brother, Joseph Konopczyk (Janet), Bear Creek; sister-in-law, Ann Marie Peters, McLean, Virginia; and several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of John's life will begin with a visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, 89 Park Ave., Wilkes-Barre, and will continue with a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Jude Parish, 420 S. Mountain Blvd., Mountain Top. The family asks that friends who are attending the Mass go directly to the church. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Parish Building Fund, 420 S. Mountain Blvd., Mountain Top, PA 18707.

May our Lord watch over you during this difficult time. I loved running into John while hunting or at garage sales, he would always stop and talk. He was proud, "of the kids and grand kids". Our thoughts and prayers are with you all, he will be remembered!
