Julie Iwanowski, 82, of Lehman Township, passed away peacefully at the Meadows Nursing Facility following a lengthy illness.
Born in Orange, N.J., she was the daughter of Joseph and Theresa Spinosa Mantione. She graduated from Central Catholic High School, Class of 1960, and earned a bachelor's degree in history and government from College Misericordia, Class of 1964. With a minor in education, Julie embarked on a teaching career in Prince George's County, Md. After an interruption to raise her children, she resumed her teaching career as an elementary teacher for over 30 years at Lehman-Jackson Elementary School.
Julie loved to travel and took many educational trips to the Western United States, New England and Europe. The knowledge gained from her travels was imparted to hundreds of her third and fifth grade students. Julie also enjoyed summer vacations at the Jersey Shore and the Hamptons with family and friends.
She was often known as a reluctant hostess for her husband's late summer parties. She surmised that it was a good time to get annual cleaning and improvements accomplished, only to find the house trashed by 140 guests. After seeing that the guests were well fed and entertained, and the music started, Julie would turn into a "party animal" and join in the festivities.
Her greatest pride was her two children, seven grandchildren and hundreds of former students.
Surviving are husband, Raymond, with whom she would have celebrated their 61st anniversary two days following her passing; her children, Ray Iwanowski (Erica), New York City, and Karen Pallante, King of Prussia; grandchildren, David, Los Angeles; Jane, Vanessa, Brooke, and Celeste Iwanowski, all of New York; and JD (Kayle), Michael, and Emma Pallante, all of King of Prussia; brother, Joseph Mantione (Kim), Old Forge; and nieces, Nicole, Tessa and Nina.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13, in Our Lady of Victory Church, 16 Second St., Harveys Lake. Interment will be held privately. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 12, at Harold C. Snowdon Funeral Home, 140 N. Main St., Shavertown, and from 10 a.m. until time of Mass Saturday at the church. All are asked to go directly to the church on the day of the funeral.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Our Lady of Victory Church, Harveys Lake, Meadows Nursing Home Auxiliary, 4 E. Center Hill Rd., Dallas, PA 18612, or Misericordia University Alumni c/o Office of Advancement, 301 Lake St., Dallas, PA 18612.

On behalf of Erna Cocozziello and family, we are sending our condolences to the Iwanowski/ Mantione cousins. Julie was more like a sister than a first cousin to our mom, sharing a beautiful bond built on tremendous love and respect despite their 10 -year age difference.
Julie´s kindness, care and infectious smile are a lasting legacy to all who knew and loved her.
Rest in Peace cousin,
"Erna"

I remember when Julie and family came out to Los Angeles to visit. I drove her to La Brea Tar Pits because it was mentioned in their history book. Best memory! Inspiration for my own teaching career!

Julie was a beautiful person...in all her dimensions. She would greet you like you were the most special person in her life. She was one of my father's favorite nieces...as he reminded us, frequently!
She loved her children and grandchildren...as she would tell whomever was listening. She very much had a joy of life that was infectious. She will be greatly missed...
