SHICKSHINNY — Robert "Sam" Sorber, 79, of Shickshinny passed away on Thursday, March 16, 2023, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
Born in Hunlock Creek on June 7, 1943, he was a son of the late Robert B. and Vera C. (Harry) Sorber. He graduated from Northwest High School graduating in 1961. During high school, he worked for Ira Rood Farming Creek. After graduation, he worked in Landsdale, Pa., installing telephone booths for seven years. He entered the National Guard and was discharged in 1972. Later he worked at Bercon, and for years, Sam worked as a mason through Union Local 215 for Sordoni Construction, Joe Kovach, and Bechtel, during the building of the nuclear powerplant. After retirement, he worked for John P. Halliday Trucking.
In 1964, he married his loving wife, Nancy R. (Harrison) Sorber. They spent 59 years together beginning a legacy for their family to follow.
Sam enjoyed snowmobiling, working on street rods, racecars and spending time at the track with his racing family. He also liked hunting, being outdoors and maintaining his yard. Anywhere he was, he especially loved dog sitting for his grand pups, "Henry" and the late "Turbo." He was a member of Sylvania Lodge 354, Shickshinny and attended the Muhlenburg Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife, he will be greatly missed by his daughter, Melissa Brutosky and husband Brian; grandson, Mason Peters; grandchildren, Cassie and Krista; and two great grandchildren. He also leaves behind sisters, Mary Lou Shutta and husband Harry, Shickshinny; Donna Lear and husband Bill, Shickshinny; brother, David Sorber and wife Shelley, Berwick; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his niece, Lisa Shutta-Bell; and nephews, Brian Lear and Dwight Johnson.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 26, 2023, at Town Hill United Methodist Church, 417 Town Hill Road, Shickshinny. Family will receive friends from 1 to 2:45 p.m. when a masonic memorial service will be held.
Family will provide flowers. Memorial contributions are suggested to Muhlenburg United Methodist Church, 83 Hunlock-Harveyville Road, Hunlock Creek, PA 18621.
