With love and sadness, we announce the passing of Ruth Chassen Kirschner of Montville, N.J., on Thursday, Sept. 25, 2025, at the age of 101.
Ruth was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Jan. 8, 1924, to Nathan and Dora Sverdlen. She had one brother, Leon, who predeceased her.
A devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, her greatest joy was her family. The apple of her eye were all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom she traveled to see, including many visits to California and Pennsylvania. She cherished the time spent with her beloved great-grandchildren, always greeting them with a thoughtful lesson and a sincere compliment. She instilled in them a love of learning and the importance of kindness, leaving an indelible mark on their lives.
Ruth had golden hands and was a talented knitter and jewelry designer. She loved to bake, play Mahjong and Canasta, and was an avid reader. She loved to travel and was very involved in the Jewish community, serving as President of the Sisterhood of Oakland Jewish Center of New York. Ruth was a devoted friend, a member of many social groups including Company A Plus in Boca Raton, Fla., and loved attending plays and concerts. She had lifelong friends and was continuously making new friends throughout her life.
Ruth lived in New York for many years and was the controller of Teckson Fabrics in Manhattan.
She was married to Leon Chassen, of Bayside, N.Y., for 47 years until his passing, and later to Lou Kirschner, of Del Rey Beach, Fla., for 13 years until his passing.
Ruth is survived by her daughter, Frann Edley, and son-in-law, Elliot Edley, and their children, Douglas Edley (wife, Lisa Edley, and children, Ava and Jonah), Jodi Edley (daughter, Lia Macey), and Neil Edley; her son, Richard Chassen (wife, Pam Chassen and their children, Daniel, Stephen, Elanah and children); her nephew, Norman Sverdlen; and her grandson, Michael Kirschner.
Shiva will be observed from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. on both Monday and Tuesday at the Edley home, 554 Tioga Ave., Kingston.
Donations can be made in her honor to Temple Israel, Wilkes-Barre, or to any charity that is close to your heart.
