Barbara Call Obituary

Barbara Jo Call

Atlanta, GA

Barbara Jo Call died on October 16, 2018 after a valiant battle with cancer in Atlanta, GA. She was 58.

Ms. Call graduated with highest honors from Hirschi High School and Georgetown University. She then earned her Juris Doctor degree as a Robert W. Woodruff fellow at Emory University School of Law, in Atlanta. She worked as an associate with Drew, Eckl, & Farnham and McKenzie-McPhail before going into private practice. Several of her property insurance cases set precedent in federal district court, the Georgia Court of Appeals, and Georgia Supreme Court. In 1988, the Georgia Bar honored her as the state's attorney with the best legal publication written that year.

Ms. Call was passionate about theater, animals and travel. Her favorite theater experience was watching Cabaret, with Alan Cumming, at the old Studio 54. Her favorite international travels include Rio de Janeiro, London, the South Island of New Zealand, Melbourne, several beach resorts in Mexico, Caneel Bay at St. John's Island, Volunteer Pointe in the Falkland Islands, Easter Island, Beijing, Wuhan, Xi'an, Montevideo, Buenos Aires, Vancouver, Toronto, Lake Louis, Cape Town and Bangkok. She climbed the bridge at Sydney Harbor. She cycled around Salzburg, Austria. She bungee jumped outside Queenstown, New Zealand. She swam to the edge of Victoria Falls and rafted down class five rapids on the Zambezi River. She saw a perfect baseball game at Turner Field, in Atlanta, and visited each of the thirty major league baseball parks. She has ridden VIA Rail, by sleeper car, all the way across Canada. She watched tennis played at all four Grand Slam events. She took the Orient Express from London to Venice. She attended memorable events at the Atlanta Summer and the Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Games. In between, she and her dogs enjoyed her cabin outside Blue Ridge, Georgia and her condominium at Seacrest Beach, Florida.

In 2014, after intensive teaching and challenging examinations, Ms. Call became a licensed practitioner at the Spiritual Living Center of Atlanta. Over the next four years, and most recently while battling cancer, Barbara completed her Masters Degree in Religious studies. Earlier this month she was ordained as Reverend Barbara Jo Call and appointed Associate Pastor of Trinity Center for Spiritual Living.

Survivors include her mother, Doris Call-Rice-Koopman and a stepfather, Frederick Koopman, both of Wichita Falls, Texas; a sister, Georgeanne Bastian, of Rockford, Illinois; two nephews and two nieces; and her dear friends Debi Purvis-Nolan of St. Louis, Missouri; Robyn Hazelrigs, Jean Bell, Dr. Sandra Jones, Marvin Gaines and her minister Revered Tony Crapolicchio all of Atlanta, Georgia; Beth Kramer of Washington D.C.; Marie Quintero of Wichita Falls, Texas; Lois McKee of Granbury, Texas; Theresa Slusher of Newport, Kentucky; and her dear cousin and caretaker, Lisa Frawley of Grayson, Georgia.

In lieu of flowers, the family and friends invite donations to Cheetah Outreach a preserve in Cape Town, South Africa; Two Tails Ranch an Elephant preserve in Florida; Seacrest Wolf preserve in Florida; Atlanta's Trinity Center for Spiritual Living; or Halcyon Hospice of Atlanta.

A celebration of Barbara's life will be held at Christ United Presbyterian Church, 1801 Loop 11, Friday October 26th at 11:00am. A service in Atlanta Georgia is pending.

I grew up 4 houses down from Barbara. I also knew her in high school. She was always driven, hard working and ambitious, but also FUN & friendly. I had the honor of working with her mother at McClurkan's, and saw that Barbara got much of her drive and smarts from Delores. Condolences to her friends and family. I'm sure they can take comfort in knowing that her's was TRULY a "life well lived". She left an impact on this planet that few can match, and she will be remembered, with respect and love, by MANY. I'm glad to have known her, and will keep her memory alive for the rest of my life.

I will always cherish the memories of my times with Barbara Jo. The very first time I met her I said "you speak so eloquently, I could let you read anything to me and I would enjoy it." I loved our lunches and the times we just visited. One never knows the impact they make on another but I forever will be greatful I had the opportunity to know her and call her my friend. I will truly miss you Barbara Jo Call.
