Arnold Klaiber Obituary

Rev. Arnold H. Klaiber
87 of Sugarcreek died Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at Walnut Hills Nursing Home following a six month illness. He was born July 26, 1927 in Buffalo, New York to the late Herbert and Helen (Dailey) Klaiber. He graduated from Kenmore High School in 1945, Heidelberg College at Tiffin, Ohio in 1951, Eden Theological Seminary at St. Louis, Missouri in 1954 and was ordained as Minister in 1954. He serviced as Pastor of the First United Church of Christ in Sugarcreek for 33 years before retiring in 1992 and has remained a member of the church. He was a member of the Eastern Ohio Association of United Church of Christ in Canton and served twice as Intrim Association Minister, was a member of the Garaway School Board for 13 years, member of the Sugarcreek Rotary for 50 years; having served twice as president and was chairman of the chicken barbecue for many years, was awarded the Sugarcreek Friend of the Arts Award and was an Honorary Candle Lighter, was chairman of the building committee for the Tuscarawas County Sr. Center and fundraising chairman of the Garaway Belden Center. He was awarded the Garaway Distinguished Citizen Award in 2011, the Garaway Friend of Education Award, Sugarcreek Founding Fathers in 2014, was honored into Tuscarawas County Sr. Citizens Hall of Fame in 2014 and given the Zeisberger-Hecheweldor Award. He enjoyed golfing and following all the Garaway School and Sporting events.
He is survived by his wife, the former Anna Belle McVitty whom he married on June 21, 1952; his children Mark (Esther) Klaiber of Sugarcreek, Philip (Ellen) Klaiber of Chagrin Falls, Nancy (Keith) Troyer and John (Tammy) Klaiber both of Sugarcreek; 10 grandchildren Clint (Lisa) Troyer, Emily (LW) Beckley, Craig (Kaitlin) Miller, Kyle (Michelle) Miller, Luke (Mandy) Klaiber, Sam Troyer, Kayla (Kevin) North, Matthew Klaiber, Kelsey Klaiber and Makenna Klaiber; three great grandchildren Lexi Troyer, Chett Troyer and Will Beckley; his sister Carol Grace of Sunset Beach, NC; and his two brothers Morton Klaiber of Westerville and Harold Klaiber of Waterville, Maine.
Cremation has taken place and Memorial Services will be held on Sunday, June 14, 2015 at 4 p.m. at the First United Church of Christ in Sugarcreek with Rev. Eric Rummel officiating. The family will receive friends on Saturday 4-7 p.m. at the First United Church of Christ at Sugarcreek. Arrangements are being handled by Smith-Varns Funeral Home at Sugarcreek. Memorials may be made to the First United Church of Christ at Sugarcreek or to The Dunkirk Conference Center. Even though we have been gone from Sugarcreek for many years, Arnie never forgot our names when we returned, and always had a smile and a recollection of family. He officiated at our wedding in 1962. What an inspiration!
