Larry was a good friend during our high school days and I remember him as a savvy Jass player at the old Leonard's. My condolences to the VanAlstyne family for your loss.

We can cherish our memories of Larry. Notably, some were when we went out to the homestead (Dover Hill Road), every Sunday for our informal family gatherings.
Gosh, we so much loved those days: Our energetic card playing, my Grandmother’s wonderful food and my Grandfather’s teasing. If you were at one of our gatherings, you would have understood the excitement we maintained. Never a dull moment and everyone welcomed. We would play cards for hours on end. The kitchen was the focal point of our gatherings. Once in a blue moon, we would watch a football game (for those who didn’t play cards). Larry and my Granddad would have this competition thing, in poker games. It was so very hard to beat Granddad, at poker. Or, so it seemed to me. Larry would get so excited (win or lose)! We all liked to do the “slap the cards down”, when we beat you. Larry and Walter were exceptionally good at it.
Larry will be missed. I always knew him as, “Larry”, being he was my Uncle. Funny how that is, I could never bring myself to calling him “Butch”, even though he liked it.

Though away from Dover since January 1958, as a classmate of Larry's the two things I best remember about him were his quiet smile (he always "got" a joke) but had a gentle smile which accompanied his gentle nature. He was pleasant to have in class and was truly a gentle man. Regret never thanking him for his service to our country! Condolences on his family's loss.
