Nicholas Contini Obituary

Nicholas R. Contini
71, of Mansfield, formerly Dover, passed away Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013. Born Jan. 15, 1942, he was the son of the late Nicholas and Lucille (Carmola) Contini. Nick was a Vietnam veteran. Nick was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Mansfield where he was active in the Knights of Columbus. He loved spending time with his grandson, Josh, who he showed how to tie flys and how to fish. Josh was also Nick's personal barber in his last few months. Fishing was Nick's passion and you could find him fishing for walleye, saugeye, salmon and much more. He was very proud to hold two catch and release world records in the 4 and 6 lb. line class for saugeye with the Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame in Hayward, Wis. He was an avid member of the Federation of Fly Fishers, Trout Unlimited, and the Mohican Fly Fishers of Ohio. Nick was also an avid reader and loved to write stories, especially about his fishing trips. Nick retired from the Dept. of Corrections in Ohio in 2003 where he worked for 28 years, starting at MANCI, moving to the Ohio State Reformatory and finally RICI where he supervised 10 to 50 inmates and four staff in day to day operations.
Nick is survived by his companion of 30 years Joan Rose; a son, John (Stella) Rose; daughters, Candice (Matt) Copier of Salt Lake City, Utah, Candy (Tom) Gopp of Dover, Ohio; sister, Marie Contini and Ted Tolloti; brother, Steve (Lori) Contini, both of Dover, Ohio; and brother, Mike (Kathee) Contini, of New Philadelphia, Ohio; grandson, Josh Rose; granddaughter, Izabella Copier; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial mass will be celebrated Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013, at 11 a.m. in St. Peter's Church, Mansfield, with Rev. Gregory Hite and Deacon Terry Philpott officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at a later date. At Nick's request, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a tuition fund at Key Bank, 345 Marion Avenue, Mansfield, OH 44903 for his grandson, Joshua Rose, attending St. Peter's Elementary School. Herlihy-Chambers Funeral Home is assisting the family with services.

Dear Marie and the whole Contini family...

My prayers are with you at this difficult time.

I remember the first time I met Nick at the Contini house on Wooster Ave. He made me because he had such a great sense of humor and a positive attitude about life. When I met him those many years ago, I saw him as a loving son, a caring father and a wonderful brother to be proud of!

Be strong and know others are with you in thought.
