Amelia Scalzo Obituary

Scalzo, Amelia (Amy) RAVENA Amelia "Amy" Datri Scalzo, 89, of Ravena, peacefully passed away on Sunday, September 8, 2013 after being surrounded by family at the Teresian House. Amy was predeceased by her loving husband of 56 years, Anthony V. Scalzo, in 2003. Amy was born in Caramanico, Italy, immigrating to the United States with her family when she was four years old. She resided for the rest of her life in Ravena, where she and Tony raised their four children and built a life filled with a large-knit community of extended family and friends - many of whom started their days with buttered toast, coffee and cool whip in the sunny kitchen of 6 Clement Avenue. She lived next to St. Patrick's Church and became a committed, faithful member of that Catholic parish. She lovingly served as a teacher's aid to the children of the RCS District for several decades, and also enjoyed her work as a waitress at the Quarry Steakhouse. Amy was a devoted mother to her four children, Karen Tierney (William), Chip Scalzo (Debbi), Maryellen Scalzo Bruno (Dennis), and Jeannie Scalzo (Mitchell). She delighted in her family's growth, and was an active, influential presence in the lives of her nine grandchildren, Alucia Scalzo, Amy Tierney, William Tierney, Anthony Bruno, Thomas Scalzo, Andrea Bruno, Olivia Hymowitz, Kayla Hymowitz, and Madeline Hymowitz. She proudly welcomed the next generation of her family last year with the birth of her first great-grandson, Zachary White. Amy is also survived by her brother, Eugene Datri and sister, Mary Tiberia Despite her battle with Alzheimer's, Amy's warm personality shone through to the end, as she became a beloved member of the communities at both Hawthorne Ridge and the Teresian House. She will be fondly remembered by all who knew her. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 9 a.m. Wednesday, September 11 at St. Patrick's Church in Ravena. Friends may call at the Babcock Funeral Home, Ravena on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Amy may be made to the Eddy Alzheimer's Center at Hawthorne Ridge, 32 Community Way, East Greenbush NY, 12061.

I met Mrs. Scalzo when I was in fifth grade in Mr. Brooks' class. She took me under her wing! We kept in touch throughout the years and she has met and spoke with my two girls (now 18 and 20 yrs old!). I feel blessed to have had her in my life. She would always smile and hold my hand and wished my family well. "Roses, roses everywhere"...I always loved you and looked up to you Mrs. Scalzo! Rest in peace; as all angels do.

the one memory that stands out is Ms.Scalzo reading the NONA BOOK to the all the children as they sat criss cross apple sauce on the floor at school enjoying every word. During the summer I would walk my dog by the school and we seemed to be on the same schedule and pass by each other and she always said hello and didn't god make a beautiful day for us to enjoy?

I'm so very sorry to hear of your Mom's passing. She was a very sweet person. I remember going to visit Mrs. Datri in the hospital, and Mrs. Scalzo and her sister Mrs. Tiberia arrived with prayer books in hand to visit Mrs. D as well. We had a terrific visit ourselves. Beautiful people with generous hearts. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

To all of Amy's loved ones, please accept our heartfelt prayers and love. I loved to visit Amy's kitchen too, and Grace and even Miles remember times spent at her house. She had all of your photos on the refrigerator and would tell Miles and Grace stories about her kids and grand-kids - she was so proud of you all. I will remember her wonderful smile and her very blue eyes. She was a lovely gentle soul who I always admired. Our sympathies are with you all. Much love, The NH Tiberias (Pam, Tom, Grace and Miles)

I am blessed by having the opportunity to have met this remarkable woman. She touched my heart in so many ways. One time Amy and I were sitting in the car while Bunny was pumping gas. Amy said "this is a very nice car" and then said I never drove. I said oh but you did, she said I did, maybe I should try again? I told her to ask Bunny if she could. Then came the twinkle in her beautiful blue eyes; she said ok, don't say anything. Bunny gets in and Amy said I would like to drive, well - Bunny said "Mom you can't drive!" Amy responded "Says who!" Amy Scalzo will be remembered by many.
Fond memories to you all, Love Lynn

To Amy's Family,

Please accept my heartfelt condolences for the loss of a magnificent lady. A thoroughly captivated fourteen year old boy, me, had the distinct honor and privilege of meeting Amy at Eugene's home in the spring of 1969. My mother Jane was even luckier, having met Amy when they both worked for Montgomery Wards after World War II. Throughout the years, after each encounter, we marveled how Amy continued to further cultivate the many wonderful attributes the Lord originally bestowed upon her. May God grant her family and friends solace at this difficult time.
