Andrew Hess Obituary

Hess, Andrew
ALBANY - Andrew "Andy" Joseph Hess III, 77, lifelong resident of Albany, passed away peacefully, June 2, 2025. Andy was the son of Andrew Joseph II and Arlene (Marcucci) Hess. He attended Cardinal McCloskey Memorial High School, and earned an Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice at HVCC. During his service with the United States Air Force, he was stationed in Plattsburgh, N.Y., Cheyenne, Wyo., and served in the Vietnam War.
In 1972, Andy joined the City of Albany Police Department, stationed at the South End Neighborhood Police Unit, and later at Division 2. Andy enjoyed "walking the beat," as he saw that as an opportunity to get to the know the people of the neighborhood and to build trust with the community. While employed, Andy was frequently heard saying "I need a day off." That wish was granted in 1993 when Andy retired from the APD, now all days were a day off!
Andy considered his children, AnnMarie (Dan) and Ryan, his greatest accomplishment, and was extremely proud of the adults they have become. Added pride and joy came with the addition of grandchildren, Amelia, Lydia, and Finnegan. Andy got a kick out of watching all three grandchildren play together, and hoped the cousins would remain close throughout their lives.
Andy is also survived by his ex-wife, Ann McCullen-Hess, with whom he remained on good terms; nephew and niece, Christopher (Michele) LaPierre, Brittney (Jason) St.Pierre; great-nephew and nieces; and friends.
Andy was predeceased by his sister, Norine LaPierre-Sidney; niece, Briea; and nephew, Benjamin.
Over the past few months Andy was well attended to by staff at the Stratton VA Hospital, Albany Medical Center, and Hudson Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. Family extends thanks to the staff who attended to his care.
Andy's family is especially grateful to the Hospice Care Team of St. Peter's Hospital as they assured his last days were spent in comfort.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Andy's family Monday, June 9, 2025, 10:00 to 11:30 a.m., at McVeigh Funeral Home, 208 N. Allen St., Albany, N.Y. 12206. His funeral service will follow at 11:30 a.m., in the funeral home. Please enter the funeral home from the rear parking lot entrance only.
The Rite of Committal will follow at 1:30 p.m., in Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville, N.Y.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks to be "a good egg," and consider a donation to The Community Hospice Foundation, or the charity of your choice.
