Benita Garland Obituary

Garland, Benita E. ALBANY, N.Y. Benita E. Garland entered into eternal rest on May 3, 2008 at the Hospice Inn of St. Peter's Hospital after a long illness. Born in Albany, N.Y. on November 16, 1965, she was the daughter of Benjamin G. Garland and Jeanette Dowdell-Garland. She served in the community, providing comfort and professional services to families who had lost loved ones as a funeral director at the Garland Brothers Funeral Home on Clinton Avenue in Albany. Benita received her early education at St. Patrick's Elementary School in Albany and graduated from Mercy High School in 1983, also in Albany. After graduation, she attended and received her bachelor of science degree from State University of New York from Plattsburgh in 1987. In 1993, she received an A.A.S. degree in mortuary science from Hudson Valley Community College and thereafter joined the family business, operating funeral homes in Albany and Syracuse, N.Y. She was a third-generation funeral director in her family. In 2002, she received a master's of science degree in public health from the State University of New York at Albany. She was a member of the National Funeral Directors & Morticians Association. She was a founder of Women of Color Cancer Support Group (WCCSG). She adopted a motto and lived her life by its precepts, "Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift and that's why we call it the present." She is survived by her parents, Benjamin G. Garland and Jeanette Dowdell-Garland; sister of Rodney Garland, Gregory Garland, Lasone Garland-Bryan, Lillian Garland, Phillippa Garland-Wilcox and James Garland; devoted nephew, Gregory Garland Jr.; cousins and godchild, Samarra Hickman; two god-sisters; and a host of other relatives and friends. Sister-in-law of Bernard H. Bryan Esq. and the late Detective Kenneth Wilcox. Funeral services will be held on Friday at the Wilborn Temple C.O.G.I.C., 121 Jay Street in Albany, N.Y. Calling at the church 9 a.m. to 12 noon prior to the service. Interment will be in Memory's Garden Cemetery. My Beloved Cousin, Benita. Pulling up on that time of year. I cannot believe it has been 13 years. Still polite to wait until the 3rd so it wouldn´t be our Aunt Leila´s birthday. You´re ere always her fav to take to her Workshop Picnics. We were always together. Even when we were apart. Although you, Poke and Potta are my younger cousins, you were always like my little sisters. And it was my duty to protect y´all. Even at the risk of bringing harm to myself. Ain´t nobody messin´ with my cousins! I stayed on Clinton Ave so much my Mom would call me to come home for dinner. I be like, I´m at Aunt Jeanette´s. We already had dinner and back on our bikes riding all over Albany or walking to the ball park. Then back to the house steps. The conversations those steps heads, lol. I LOVED BEING WITH MY COUSINS. Losing you was the second worst day of my entire life. Second only to losing Nikita. I loved you then, and love you now. You´re born into family. "Friends" come and go. FAMILY IS FOREVER! How you used to say " Damn Skippy!" Rest Up, Cuz. See ya later.

I don't know how I missed the notice/obituary, I have checked the Times union since 2000 after returning to SC. The other day I did a search for Garlands in Albany NY and found Lillian, she told me of the loss the Garlands have experienced with Rod , Greg and Benita. I love the family, I had a crush on Benita, she was such a greta person and dancer, so lovely, I was so happy that she would dance with me..it's a year and something sice your gone Benita, we all love you who knew you, some better then others but the love is still the same..RIP..

To the Garland Family, Thank you for sharing Benita with the rest of us. I knew her a long time ago as a child and till this day I have never forgotten what a special person she was. I was always struck by her kindness and compassion for others. I hope you will take solace in knowing that although she is no longer here physically she will always be present in your heart.

To Cliff,

My heart was so saddened to hear of the recent passing of your beautiful sister Benita. I would often see her from time to time and she would always remember me from when you and I used to hang out when we were younger. She would always keep me up to speed on how you were doing. She cared deeply for her "little brother" and I am sure she will continue to keep her eye on you from up above! Please give my best to Potta and Poke and the rest of your family. May she rest in Peace.

I met Benita 27 years ago, and my how time has past. I observed her as a beautiful shining angel, an achiever who was multifacited and seemed to be able to achieve anything she decided to do. Benita loved her family, career, education, belief in God and her community. Yet in spite of all these gifts, she was a much better person, one who I can honestly say, my life is so much better because I got to know her through the years, and I am a better person because of that. May God rest her soul and continue to comfort her family.

beautiful benita's birthday and mine are two days apart---i was born on november 14. but ten years separate us--i was born in '55 ...so i didn't have the blessed pleasure, of 'knowing' ms. garland. from all accounts, she was beauty, class, intelligence and "black power, pride and inspiration" personified. a saved soul. a child of the King. may she rest in peace...

and garland family and friends of the family, look to the hills for your strength, which cometh from the Lord. the Maker of heaven and earth.

prayng for God to keep you all in His tender, loving arms of mercy and healing.

Remember

Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay.
Remember me when no more day by day
You tell me of our future that you plann'd:
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.
Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad.

To the Garland Famly,
I'll never forget the day I met Benita, she came to the Doctors office where I worked and while I was taking care of her I asked her was she related to the Garland family, and she said, Mr. Garland is my father. After that I said to her no wonder you have such a beautiful spirit. We talked as though we knew each other for years. We laughed and encouraged each other during our conversation. She truly had a sweet spirit that touched anybody she came in contact with. My prayers are with you, and just remember God has picked one of his precious flowers to place in heaven. Love you all
