Bernard McGinn Obituary

McGinn, Bernard (Bernie) SCHENECTADY Bernard Henry "Bernie" McGinn, 82, of Parkland Gardens, formerly of Rotterdam, died early Tuesday, December 20, 2006 at Kingsway Arms Nursing Center. He was the son Lawrence and Louise McGinn and was a graduate of Mont Pleasant High School. Bernie served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, as a Yeoman 1st Class aboard several Fletcher-Class destroyers in the Pacific Theater. After being called back to duty during the Korean War, he returned to Schenectady and began a long and successful career with John Hancock Life Insurance Company. While at John Hancock, Bernie achieved designations as a chartered life underwriter and chartered financial consultant. He retired as regional supervisor in 1986. After retirement, Bernie spent several years as a licensing instructor at Combined Life Insurance Company. A longtime communicant of St. Madeleine Sophie's Church in Guilderland, Bernie was active in the parish council, Mens' Association, Nocturnal Adoration, Third Order of the Carmelite's and St. Vincent dePaul Society. He was an avid tennis player. Bernie is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Irene (Patnode) McGinn and his devoted children, Susan (Richard) Girardi of Glenville, Diane (Vincent) Martiniano of Guilderland, Patricia (Paul) Pollack of Kinderhook, Mary (John) Szczech of Delmar, Barbara (Kenneth) Blocher of Kingman, Ariz. and Patrick (Diane) McGinn of Clifton Park. He is also survived by 11 adoring grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will begin Friday morning at 9:00 from DeMarco-Stone Funeral Home, 1605 Helderberg Avenue, Rotterdam, thence to St. Madeleine Sophie Church, Carman Road, Guilderland where at 10:00 a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Schenectady. Friends are invited and may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 4-7 p.m. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers, in the name of Bernie, may be made to the St. Vincent dePaul Society at St. Madeleine's and Community Hospice of Schenectady, 1411 Union St., Schenectady, NY 12308.

Dear Irene, Diane, Vinnie, Katie and Debbie,
Mike and I extend our sypmpathy to all of you. Bernie was such a grand gentleman and had such an outgoing personality. It was always a pleasure to see him at church or in the community. Our prayers to all. Mike and Pat Parker

My heart goes out to you at this time and in the days ahead. I am so sorry that I couldn't be there to comfort you (I am in Boston with Helen for the holidays). Irene, I will call and visit as soon as I get back. My cousin called me today to tell me about Bernie. love to all of you.
