DELMAR - Brian Kerry McCarthy, 78 of Delmar, passed away at Shaker Place Rehabilitation and Nursing Center during the morning of July 28, 2023.
Born on the Fourth of July, 1945, Brian was a proud Catholic son of Ireland who carried his family's love and legacy throughout his life. His parents, Francis Xavier McCarthy and Mary McCarthy (nee Murphy), raised him in Amsterdam, N.Y., the same place of his birth. Following his graduation from the Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons School in Schenectady, Brian earned a bachelor's degree from Notre Dame University, as well as a master's degree from the State University of New York in Albany, where he was also ABD (all but dissertation). Before graduate school, Brian served in the United States Marine Corps and was deployed to Vietnam during the U.S. war and occupation.
After completing his education, Brian became a dedicated public servant for the State of New York. He worked in a variety of state agencies across his 30-year career and finally served in the Division of Housing and Community Renewal for at least two decades. His work was guided by the core belief that government could make people's lives better if elected officials focused on their responsibilities to the public.
Brian is survived by his wife, Beth McCarthy (nee Ryan); his children, Meg McCarthy, Kathleen McCarthy, and Stephen Pampinella; his sister, Maureen (Larry) Wight; his loving in-laws, Dale (Paul) Richards, Nora (John) Ownes, and Kevin Ryan, and many nieces and nephews. As befitting his Irish heritage, Brian was a member of Ancient Order of Hibernians. He loved history, Notre Dame football, and the Red Sox.
Services will be held in The Church of St. Vincent de Paul, 900 Madison Ave., Albany on Tuesday, August 1, with the wake from 3:30-5 p.m. and the funeral at 5 p.m. Mourners who cannot physically be present may livestream the services at https://www.facebook.com/stvincentalbany.
In lieu of flowers, Brian's family requests that donations be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research in his honor.
