Carl Touhey Obituary

Touhey, Carl E. ALBANY Carl E. Touhey, a lifelong Albany businessman, passed into eternal life at the remarkable age of 95. He was a graduate of the Albany Academy and Princeton University (class of '39) and ran a stunning race for mayor of Albany in 1973. As an avid sailor, he sailed along the Eastern seaboard and once crossed the Atlantic. He was president of Orange Motor Company, which was founded by his father, Charles (who also lived into his 90s) on Friday the 13th 1916. Carl always chuckled at that date, quickly adding, "And we're still standing, still strong!" For over 75 years his various businesses, among which were the Canada Dry Bottling Company, and The Quevic Vichy Company, and various real estate entities provided employment for hundreds of Capital Region families. As successful as he was, he equally enjoyed giving back to his community. When asking others to do the same, he had an interesting strategy. He would say "How can I get big bucks from this guy? First I need to set the tone by stepping up myself." And he did. Some of his favorite organizations were big, such as Albany Medical Center, The College of Saint Rose, WMHT Public Television, Saratoga Performing Arts Center and the Albany Symphony. But he also cared about smaller organizations like Capital Region Sponsor a Scholar, the 15 Love Youth Program and the Touhey Homeownership Foundation, all of which directly serve families in our community who were not as fortunate to have the resources Carl had. He was also a respected member of several clubs in both Albany and the Delray Beach, Fla. area: The Fort Orange Club, Schuyler Meadows CC, Manalapan Yacht Club, The Little Club, and Gulfstream Bath & Tennis Club. Finally, he would always say "It all comes down to family." Carl was the son of Charles and Winifred, brother to Frank (Carlo) and sister Alice (Dick Walsh). He and his wife, Nancy (Downing), shared a great mutual love and devotion. Carl was previously married to the former Lila Latham, who are parents to Charles (Alice Green), John (Patricia Lowry), Lila Marie and Virginia (Kathy Simmonds). He is grandfather to Evan, Colin, Charlie, John (Jen Forster) and Brenda and great-grandfather to Kaiya, Olivia and Ava. Carl was an active and surrogate father to his brother Frank's children: Terez, Frank, Eileen, CoCo, Tony, Patrick, Carl, Justine and Carlo, and his sister Alice's children: Larry, Natalie, Nick, Carl and Eleanor. Carl was also generously involved in the lives of Nancy's children: Kathy, George, Peter, Amy, Carrie, Michael, and Mary, and their many children and grandchildren. Funeral services Thursday, August 29, 2013 at 10 a.m. in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Albany where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Relatives and friends are invited and may respectfully call Wednesday, August 28, 2013 4 to 7 p.m. in the McVeigh Funeral Home, 208 North Allen Street, Albany. Carl loved his home. The country gentleman was at peace in nature. He loved the horses we kept there. He loved walking, breathing and feeling the countryside. I’ll never forget his kindness and enthusiasm for the important things in life.

Lila, My parents and I just found out about your father's death. I have thought about you over the years and wondered how you are doing? I left Albany about 15 years ago and live in Virginia. Please tell your family that Henry, Mathilde and Maribeth Bersani send our prayers and thoughts. Your father was a wonderful man.

Phil Willkie

September 6, 2013

My father Philip Willkie thought of Carl as his best friend. They met at Princeton. He was my god father. Though I did not seem him often, I cherished our times together & his hysterical sense of humor. At my father's funeral in 1974, we were somber until Carl arrived. In the most difficult situations, he could add light & compassion. Carl my have been the last person who knew my grandfather Wendell Willkie as a young adult. On a tour with him at the hideous modern Capitol complex in Albany, Carl said Rockefeller spent our money as if we had his money". Funny how that has stuck with me among his many great quips. A great spirit has moved on, will be missed by all who loved him. [email protected]

My deepest sympathies on the passing of a lovely man. He was supportive of my nursing work in Africa and I loved and appreciated him for his generous spirit.

A couple of months ago my husband and I decided to have a picnic although the weather was not cooperating. We ventured out to the Dutch barn and set up our picnic indoors. Mr. Touhey drove out right up to the barn doors to see what kind of nuts would picnic on a day like that. He was extemely friendly and welcoming, discussing the geese on the property and how glad he was that we were enjoying ourselves. He will surely be missed.

Nancy and family, my condolences to you all. I just found out of the passing of Carl, and I am so sorry for your loss. Taking care of him in SICU at Albany Medical Center and meeting all of you was an experience that I will never forget. Even though he was ill, you could see the love he had for all of you and you all for him. You all are an exceptional family and I feel honored not only have taken care of Carl but to meet all of you. Thank you for being a part of my life. God has given us a very special Angel to watch over and protect all of you. My thoughts and prayers are with you and all your family. May God bless you all. Charles, Alice and Entire Touhey Family,
Sincerest of condolences on the loss of your father. Mr. Touhey was my 6th grade teacher at St. Anthony's School and very very kind to myself, my brother (for many years to come....) and I now know the legacy from which he surely must have learned such kindness and generosity. Alice, you know me from those dark place writings seeking legal assistance for the incarcerated. God Bless you both.

My condolences to the Touhey family. I've always thought of you all as part of our extended family and when I was growing up our visits were something I really looked forward to. One of my fondest memories was taking the sailboat through the locks to Lake Champlain, and how Carl trusted John and I - with a little hidden oversight - to bring that boat up in one piece! There are many fond memories of our times together and I am grateful for Carl's positive impact on our family over the years.

Dear Lila,
I recently read a letter you sent to me back in the 90's and wondered how I could get in touch with you. I never thought this would be the way. I hope this reaches you. I am sad for your loss. I will never forget you and Buddy.

This past week God called one of His special Angels to Heaven. Carl, attended one of our St.Vincent Ferrer Church Care Ministry meetings in Delray Beach, FL. almost 25 years ago and after three meetings he decided he liked what we were doing but did not want to be a Care Minister. Instead he asked to become an Angel. Over the years when we had a particularly tough case that would take more than we could afford, we would call Carl. He would review the case and at times meet with the client to resolve their situation. Carl was a most private, generous and supportive parishioner who quietly helped many members of our parish and community. May God bless Carl, his family and all the friends he made while being our Angel. Thank you Carl for showing us the way. Mike.

Dearest Virginia and all the Touhey family,
I join with so many others who knew Carl in offering my deepest sympathy on his passing. Although it is little consolation at this sad time, it should be of some satisfaction to know that in his passing you can celebrate the end of a very long and productive life.
The measure of a life well-lived is not in how much money one has or what possessions they have accumulated, but rather through the lives they touched and the sorrow they leave behind. Carl touched the lives of many, many people with his generosity, kindness and humor. If the outpouring of sympathy on his loss is any indication, and it most certainly is, you can proudly and confidently say that his indeed was a life well-lived.
May you find peace and comfort in knowing that his loss is felt by all who knew and loved him.
In Sympathy,
Letitia Splain Dayer

I would like to give my condolences to the Touhey family and Nancy as well. I want to say it was a pleasure of taking care of this great man or the past couple of months.I enjoyed the conversations we had and staying by Carl's side when he needed company at his bedside.Ill always remember him as one of my favorite patients i took care of in the hospital even though i was a nurses aid i was there for him all of the time. Most importantly ill always remember the kind words he said to me like "your such a sweet, loving and caring person." and even that he appreciated all the things i did for him. Even though i only knew Carl for two months it was the best two months of my life on D5East.

My horse took me down the life-giving road
Drawing his breath of strong spirit
His breath of power to plow and to pull
But now he is old
And his breath is of feathers and corn
I add to his breath
The breath of my own
And pray to his old age of riches.

Carl Touhey was a class act. Many years ago when I was a salesman at Orange Motors, when someone referred to him as Mr. Touhey, he'd say, "Mr. Touhey was my father. I'm Carl." Rest in peace, Carl.
