Carol Hageman

Hageman, Carol GUILDRELAND Carol Wenneis Hageman, 87, of Brookedge Apartments died Tuesday, February 1, 2011, at her residence after a long illness. Born in Union City, N.J., she was the daughter of the late William Wen-neis and Josephine Acker Wenneis and beloved wife of the late Rev. Howard G. Hageman. She was raised in North Bergen, N.J. and later resided in Newark, N.J., New Brunswick, New Baltimore and in Guilderland since 1991 and a graduate of Union City High School in N.J. and Katharine Gibbs School in New York City. Mrs. Hageman was a homemaker and minister's wife. She was active in the Reformed Church both locally and nationally, a member of the Women's Board of Domestic Mission and eventually served as vice president of the First General Program Council. She served on the Newark Board of Education for six years, and as vice president for two, chairperson of the Building and Grounds committee during which time a new high school was built and was a founding member of the Newark Preschool Council (antedated Head-start). She was also a member of the Community Chest and United Way. Carol was active in the Newark Civil Rights movement, working with community women and attended the last day of Dr. King's march from Selma as well as Dr. King's funeral. She traveled almost yearly, mostly to Europe to attend meetings to which Howard had either some responsibility or program participation. Her longest trip was to South Africa in 1956 for three months on invitation of the U.S. Department of State to her husband for a lecture/preaching schedule. Music was always important in her life, singing with Robert Shaw, and after her marriage she was always in the church choir and at home with Howard at the piano. She always had a role to fill with Howard's work as minister and teacher and finally as seminary president. After retirement, she delivered Meals on Wheels out of Coxsackie. Once alone, she continued doing that and also did that out of Guilderland. Carol became very active at the First Church in Albany (Reformed) in the food pantry, an ordained elder, senior elder, Chair W.M.A., etc., particularly the Tuesday Bible Study. She received great satisfaction in being a broadcaster/reader for the RISE program at WMHT. Survivors include two nieces, Carol (Arthur) Levy, Bald-winsville, N.Y., and Nancy (Richard) Behun, Willston, Vt.; a nephew, David Houghtaling, Res-ton, Va.; and sister-in-law of Betty and Walter Houghtaling, formerly of Delmar, N.Y. She was predeceased by a sister, Grace Franck. A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 12, at noon at the First Church in Albany (Reformed), 110 N. Pearl St., Albany. There will be no calling hours.
