Daniel Flahive Obituary

Flahive, Daniel J. ALBANY Daniel Joseph Flahive, 84, of the Teresian House, formerly of Niskayuna, N.Y., died August 8, 2007 at St. Peter's Hospital. Daniel was born in Waterbury, Conn. on May 6, 1923, the son of the late Daniel P. and Anna Fitzgerald Flahive. He served in the U. S. Navy during World War II. He received his bachelor's degree from Springfield College and his master's degree from the New York State College for Teachers at Albany. He was a science teacher in the Niskayuna School District for 28 years. Daniel also worked for over 20 years as a business analyst at Albany Medical Center. In the 1950s, he directed summer water programs for the Albany Chapter of the American Red Cross and Wolferts Roost. He was the founder of Pinewoods Day Camp and Swim Club in Glenville, N.Y. which he operated in the 1960s. He was affectionately known as "Mr. Dan" by hundreds of campers who enjoyed swim lessons, archery practice, nature walks and rides on the Pinewoods fire engine. He was a member of the Mayfair-Burnt Hills Kiwanis, the Niskayuna Elks and the Ancient Order of Hibernians. Daniel is survived by his children Stephen of Jersey City, N.J., Mark, Kevin and Brian of Schenectady, Ellen of Fishkill, Paul (Sue) of Waterford, Karen (Jack) Graber of Niskayuna and John of Albany; grandchildren, Danielle, Alexandra, Kevin, Liam, Siobhan and Brendan Flahive; great-granddaughter, Charlotte Flahive and sister Mary Ellen (Rex) Thrasher of Chappaqua, N.Y. Daniel was predeceased by his two brothers, John and Maurice, and by his former wife and good friend, Mary Martin Flahive. Daniel will be remembered for his delightful sense of humor, which he steadfastly maintained as he coped with Parkinson's disease for many years. Family and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the Infant of Prague Chapel at the Teresian House, 200 Washington Avenue Extension, Albany, N.Y. The family will receive callers after the Mass. Interment will follow in Albany Rural Cemetery. The family wishes to thank the staff and administration of the Teresian House for their care of Daniel and their ongoing work on behalf of the elderly, and suggests that, in lieu of flowers, those desiring to may make memorial contributions to the Teresian House Foundation, 200 Washington Avenue Extension, Albany, NY 12203. It´s late. I was thinking about people who have influenced my life. I always referred to Mr flahive as Dr. flahive. His mannerism was always calm. He gave me D. I still smiled at him because I loved when he smiled back. I should have received an F

KJ and family, please accept our sincere condolences. To my mother, Marion Miller, Mr. Flahive was a long-term teaching colleague at Niskayuna. To my sister, Alma Miller, Mr. Flahive was an understanding and encouraging teacher. To me, he was someone to avoid at school, because he always knew what we were doing wrong, before we did it! Before that, he was the “all-powerful” giant-of-a-man who ran Pine Woods Day Camp. He earned our respect with experience-driven wisdom and his sense of humor will certainly be missed. Our hope is that his energy and spirit live on through the actions of his family.
