Herlt, David Edward PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. David Edward Herlt was the oldest of three children born to Maurice "Pete" Herlt and Dorothy Fanning in Troy on July, 24, 1941; he passed away on July 31, 2018. Dave attended Paul Smiths College in the Adirondacks and enlisted shortly after graduation in the U.S. Coast Guard where he would also meet and marry Mary Koster. Dave attended NC State University after his service and graduated with honors and a degree in pulp and paper engineering and furthered his education with a master's degree from Thomas College in Waterville, Maine. In 1969, Dave began his 38 year career with International Paper Company where he and Mary would begin to raise three daughters. Dave served the community by participating on a number of organizations and boards throughout his career which most notably included the Paper Science and Engineering Foundation at Miami University in Ohio and the Board of Directors of the SUCO Foundation at SUNY Oswego in New York. During this time, they also discovered their new found love of biking and developed a network of friends who joined them as they participated in multi-day rides around the country and throughout Europe logging over 26,000 miles. One of Dave's greatest accomplishments was the 4,800 mile coast to coast Cross Canada biking event that he and Mary completed in 2004. Always a devout Catholic, Dave will be remembered for his deep faith. This faith helped him through the passing of Mary and opened his heart for Janet Devereux who would become his wife in 2010. Dave and Jan took advantage of the short time they had together to do all they could and lived life to the fullest including finishing the book Dave wrote about his biking adventures "Pedals, Prayers and Perseverance." Dave is survived by his wife, Janet Wilson Devereux of Litchfield Beach, S.C.; his sisters, Mary Herlt (George Preston) and Joan Gould of New York; daughters, Barbara Comeau of Shelburne, Vt., Katie (Michael) Oliver of Columbia, S.C. and Jennifer (Coby) Sweeney from Cincinnati. Dave also leaves his grandchildren, Emma, Paige, Sophie, Madison, Hannah, Mackenzie, Jack and Sam. The family would like to extend special thanks to Charles Creel, Delores Winn, Rita Giles and Mary Jo Zook who offered Dave and Jan constant support and compassionate care. The family will receive friends on Friday, August 10, from 10-11 a.m. at the Precious Blood Catholic Church, 1633 Waverly Road, Pawleys Island, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial.
