Etta Jones Obituary

Born in Albany she was the daughter of the late Frank and Elizabeth Mosher Penk. Etta was a retiree of the Albany Catholic Diocese after many years of service. She was known to many as Mom, Gram and of course Ike that she was nicknamed by her father. Etta was fun loving and full of life. She enjoyed camping, cruising, casinos, shopping, anything pink and of course her jewelry, her manicured nails as well as her latex gloves to protect them, but most important was her love of family and Christmas, where she would have an elegant table set for many holiday gatherings and tell stories about her handmade ornaments. Etta's famous words to end any conversation, "It is what it is." Survivors include her children, Lisa (Mike) Wheeler, David (Jennifer) West, Darcy (John) Chorwat; grandchildren, Kyle Wheeler, Morgan (Chris) O'Brien, Mark, Chistopher, Nicholas, Trevor, Matthew, Joseph and Samantha West, Ryan and Ethan Brown, John and Michael Chorwat; great-grandchildren, Jayden, Riley and Eamon; siblings, Linda Russell, Richard Penk, Joyce (Kenneth) Gorcesky, Kenneth (Donna) Penk, Dawn (Hani) Marar and Carla Jackson. She was predeceased by her beloved son Darin West; and her siblings, Pamela and Leroy Fay, Frank and Beverly Penk Jr., James and Sandra Penk, Thomas Russsell and Elizabeth (Betty) Penk. Etta is also survived by her daughter-in-law Cheryl West; and many nieces, nephews and friends. In accordance with Etta's wishes, funeral services will be private. I am so very sorry for the loss of Etta, she was such a lovely and caring lady. I enjoyed her stories about her life and most of all her family, for whom it was so very apparent she loved deeply and was so very proud of. She loved sharing her stories of her past to anyone who would listen. I regret not having more time to have spent with Etta and her immediate family who were all such models of her loving personality and it was very apparent they wanted only the best for her. I am confident she is was very proud of each of her family members. She certainly spoke often of her family, and how very much she loved you all. I hope the memories you all share of Etta will help you all through this most difficult time. It was my pleasure to care for Etta and work with all of you.

Dear Family -
I don´t know if you know this or not, but Aunt Etta was my Godmother. She always made me feel special. On Christmas evenings, our family would make `the rounds´ and go to visit with Aunts, Uncles, and cousins. I was always excited about these trips and especially thrilled to go to Aunt Etta and `Uncle Al´s´. There she was, my classy Aunt Etta - she always looked polished and had the most amazingly beautiful fingernails! Her perfume was lovely. I admired her because of who she was and because she was my special Auntie. We exchanged small gifts on Christmas, and Aunt Etta always had something very special and thoughtful just for me.
I´ll always remember those treasured times with family, especially due to the Christmas season being upon us. I hope this little tidbit of info will bring a smile to your faces during this sad time.
With love and hugs,
Melanie Bonenfant

Hani and I hold fond memories of Ike who served as matron of honor at the Reaffirmation of our wedding vows in 1981! It was an honor to wear my big sister's wedding gown! Our condolences to Lisa, Darcy and David; the grandchildren and great grandchildren; and all who loved her. May good memories comfort.
