Eugene Weiss Obituary

Weiss, Eugene NISKAYUNA Eugene Weiss died at home on January 30, 2014, after a lengthy illness. He was born in Czechoslovakia to Mayer and Gisela Weiss, who named him Jeno. At 13, his life was destroyed by Nazi invaders in his city and his parents and five younger siblings were murdered. Miraculously, he and his two older brothers survived the abominations and brutality of concentration camps and were freed in the maelstrom of post World War II. Jeno, who chose to use Eugene for business purposes, worked with a Jewish organization in Europe for five years, then came to the States to join his brothers who had preceded him here. He and his oldest brother were in commercial real estate, but that career was interrupted by becoming a U.S. citizen and serving two years in the Army. Gene was proud of his stint in service, was a master supply sergeant and a medalist sharpshooter. After discharge, he continued working in the New York City area until meeting his wife-to-be, Roslyn, who came from Schenectady. Marrying here, but living in New York until after their first two children, they moved permanently upstate and their third child was born at Ellis Hospital. Gene became involved in area real estate, from Glens Falls to Northern New York, and in Massachusetts as well. He lived, ate and breathed his business, loving Latham in which he had his mall office. Never forgetting that he had arrived in this welcoming country with a small suit case and little English, he was generous with causes that resonated with him. He endowed a chair at Yeshiva University, was an early supporter of Boys' Town of Jerusalem, a donor to Ellis. He and Ros built a Pavilion wing at Laniado Hospital in Israel, built the Weiss Academic Center for the high school of their youngest son. Gene, with painful heart, brought that senior class to Auschwitz for their class trip; they learned first hand of the misery wrought by hatred. The loss of his family was never far from his mind, but he delighted in his children and grandchildren. Games and play were difficult with his background (having to earn a living with no extended family at 15), but he later found enjoyment in bridge, always pleased to add another small trophy to his collection. Football, baseball and golf were his favorite TV programs. Over the years, trips abroad with his family and cruises with his wife gave pleasure, too. Gene enjoyed being part of the minyanaire group at Sabbath services in Congregation Beth Israel, and he was a member of the Jewish War Veterans. Gene leaves his beloved wife of 53 plus years, Roslyn; his cherished children, Alex, of No. Palm Beach, Fla., Gail (Ernst Kuschel) and Marc (Carrie) who are local. His dear grandchildren, Samantha and Veronica; Rebekah, Sarah, Eliana and Samuel; Chloe, Zachary and Sadie. Also Morris (Edith) Weiss, his older brother in Israel; sister-in-law, Agnes Weiss-Goldman, and numerous nephews and their families. Services at the Levine Memorial Chapel, 649 Washington Avenue, Albany on Sunday, February 2, 2014 at 2:30 p.m. Interment will follow in the Beth Israel Cemetery, Abbottsford Road in Rotterdam. The period of mourning will be observed at the Weiss residence in Niskayuna on Sunday evening from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. and on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 1 to 4 p.m. commencing again from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Holocaust Memorial Museum, 100 Raoul, Wallenberg Place SW Washington, DC, 20024. Ros is grateful to the following who have helped the family during this journey: the compassionate staff at NY Oncology and Hematology (Rexford), Dr. Goldstein and Dr. Hausler for medical skill and humanity, Rabbi Moshe Bomzer for strength and warmth, Rabbi Paul Silton for enduring friendship, Rabbi Moshe Mirsky of Congregation Beth Israel, and our friends who with visits, emails, shared meals, have provided comfort, love and support unending. I am so sorry to have just learned of this very sad news. I have very fond memories of Jeno. He was a very kind, wise, and generous man. He was chosen to survive and lived an incredibly full life after his horrible experiences as a child of the holocaust. He didn't just chose to survive. He chose to live. On behalf of my mother, Clare goldmacher, and myself and my family, I send my heartfelt condolences to Ros, Alex, Gail, Marc and families, as well as The entire Weiss family. Love, Sheila and Steve Gerlock and family.

Sorry to hear of your loss, my dad and I worked for Gene at the Latham Circle Mall, my dads home away from home. This during when Tony Audi & John Holmes were there, used to hang out w/ Jerry & Pete at the Circle Deli. This man has been through more than anyone should ever have to go through. Thanks, Gene for letting me drive your Jaguar to fill the gas tank, it was my honor! RIP, Peacefully.

It is with deep sadness to hear of the recent loss of our dear friend Gene, "Mr. Weiss."

Words could never express the sorrows we carry in our hearts as we consider ourselves among the most fortunate
ones to have shared a part of the life of "Gene," an amazing man, and his wonderful loving family.

The service at the Levine Memorial Chapel was a beautiful tribute to a well deserved man who at an early
age suffered and struggled intensely but proved to the world that no matter what hardships or challenges one may
face, they can be overcome with perseverance, stamina, and the will to move forward with "hope and determination!"

Gene realized the value and importance of life, not only for himself but for those he loved and cared for. Through
his good example and hard work he taught us how to use wisely every moment.

Even through his busy schedule he always took the time to acknowledge myself and others with a gentle handshake and a smile, then it was back to business as usual. He was a giving, caring man with a huge heart and a "gift from God to us".

For many years Jerry worked for Gene at the Latham Mall, The Hilton Hotel, and many other businesses where many
new lasting friendships were made.

Work was provided for our family and for this we will forever be grateful.

To Ros, Alex, Gail, Marc, and family, as you grieve know that we are remembering and honoring the memory of “Gene."

His words and loving kindnesses will always remain close to our hearts.

May the love of family and friends sustain you in these difficult days as we hold you close in our thoughts and prayers.

Please accept our most heartfelt sympathies for your loss and know we are here for you always.

May God bless you and keep you in his care, now and in the days to come.

With our deep condolences, gratitude, love, and forever friendship,

Dorothy & Jerry

Where do I start, 1976 found me at Latham Circle Mall doing a Job for someone else when a man introduced himself to me as Gene Weiss. He later into that job asked me to build a store for him and our working related friendship started. Little did I know what a journey was in store for me. I stayed with Gene for many years working at Latham Mall and also traveled to some of his properties. Gene made such a difference in my life that I cannot express. I remember many times just sitting in his office and talking about the next job or just talking about his family he loved so much. I will never forget one of his famous sayings (walk with me) and I did this many times. This man was like a father/brother to me. He always told me if I ever needed anything just to let him know. I never needed any thing because he always took care of me and my family by providing me with work. Working with Gene was also a great learning experience. Gene will truly be missed in my heart. I will never forget what a change he made in me and my family's life.

Ros, Alex, Gail, and Mark,

I just wanted all of you to know how much Gene meant to me.
My prayers and love go out to all of you always,

Jerry Bolduc
