One would have so many words that have to be said about Chief George Pratt. I would like to say, he was my friend, and my Chief during my employment with the Altamont PD from September 1978 thru September 1979.
I was between Law Enforcement positions, when I was waiting to be hired by the NY State Police. He heard that I was looking to keep my Certification and when he found out I needed a position for a short-time; he, without me asking, hired me for as long as I needed. I moved on with his help to complete 46+ years in Law Enforcement.
We have lost a good Police Officer who looked after Altamont for some 20+ years. A kind gentleman, very professional, and never wavering from being the people's Officer. Day or night, George looked after all his people of Altamont.
He will always be remember by everyone whoever knew him. Thank you again Chief for hiring me and allowing me to be a member of your Department. I will always remember him as a friend and the Chief of Police of Altamont.
God bless and rest in peace my friend. I will miss knowing that you aren't around. I thank you.
Travel safe on your new journey. And yes, I do owe you a cup of coffee when we catch up again later... For now, Frank Hildebrandt

I lived in Altamont for 18 years, starting 2000. Great memories of George tapping his feet to the music that we, The Village String Band, would play at occasionally at The Home Front Cafe' on Friday nights and Sunday breakfast. He always greated us with a warm handshake and heartfelt appreciation for playing a couple of his favorite tunes. Srong and active even in his later years. Will miss seeing him on his horse, a real fixture in the village landscape

George not only was the past Chief of Police. He had a love for horses. I met him over 40 years ago as a horse crazed kid who wanted nothing more than to learn how to ride. He (along with Peg Davis) willingly gave me that opportunity. Even though the years when our paths crossed he was always smiles and happy to see me while we chatted about old times and caught up. There isn't enough that I can say to show my appreciation. He was a true gentleman and a real cowboy.
