James Cassidy Obituary

Cassidy, James J. Jr., M.D. LATHAM James J. Cassidy Jr., M.D., 87, died at his home on October 21, 2015, after a gallant battle with pancreatic cancer. Born in Albany, September 21, 1928, son of the late Genevieve and James J. Cassidy Sr. He was a graduate of the former Vincentian Institute High School, Siena College, and Albany Medical School, where he earned his medical degree in the Obstetric and Gynecological fields. He completed a fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis, and also served his country in the National Guard for ten years. Dr. Cassidy practiced medicine at the former Brady Hospital, Albany Medical Center and St. Peter's Hospital, where he cared for thousands of women and delivered over 12,000 babies. For a number of years, he also served as a faculty member at Albany Medical College. A dedicated and warm physician, Dr. Cassidy was beloved by his patients and respected by his colleagues. He co-founded the St. Peter's Family Health Clinic OBGYN Health Center with Dr. Jack Brosnan and served as chief of the Obstetrician- Gynecological staff at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany. He continued his service in medicine when he moved to Pinehurst, N.C., where he worked at Moore County Health Department for a number of years. Humility, humor, and acceptance of all people, regardless of their faults or strengths, are some of Dr. Cassidy's many fine traits. A superb musician, he played the saxophone, clarinet, and piano and he enjoyed singing in the Tin Whistle Barbershop Quartet in Pinehurst. A fabulous golfer, he and his wife spent many happy years living in Pinehurst, where they were active members of the Pinehurst Country Club. Dr. Cassidy was a marvelous storyteller and he possessed an endless well of knowledge that he never flaunted, but always shared humbly if he knew it would help others. Most of all, a devout Roman Catholic, Dr. Cassidy was a loyal and generous parishioner of both St. Mary's in Albany and Sacred Heart Church in Pinehurst. Dr. Cassidy is survived by his "beautiful bride", Nancy Neville Cassidy, whom he enjoyed a 62 year marriage. He was the father of Brian Cassidy (Kathleen), Rea Cassidy, Moira Cassidy, Brendan Cassidy, and Martha Cassidy Kerr (Jeremy) and their late infant daughter, Nora Cassidy (1955); brother of Jack Cassidy (Ginny),William Cassidy (Joyce) and Patricia Parker. Also survived by 13 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 27, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at the Historic Church of St. Mary, Albany, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. All are invited to attend and may call at the McVeigh Funeral Home, Monday from 4-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to: the Community Hospice Foundation, 295 Valley View Blvd. , Rensselaer, NY 12144 or St. Peter's Hospital Foundation, 315 South Manning Blvd., Albany, NY 12208. We served together in the National Guard Washington Ave Doc was approachable, kind humorous and forever thoughtful...wonderful person

After losing a child during child birth (not under Doc Jim's care) and because of my relationship in the Guard, Captain Jim became my wife's new Doctor. Because of his guidance, knowledge and urging we adopted two children from Catholic Charities, Albany Father Downes. We since have grown to 8 grand children and one recent great grand child. Your (Father and Husband) was the linchpin that brought us years of joy and happiness. God Bless You RIP

Dr Cassidy was an excellent physician. I joined him in his practice in 1985. His former patients still ask about him and remember him fondly. He was well respected by all who knew him. Doctors would seek his advice for difficult cases in patient care. He was also consulted for advice regarding the horses at Saratoga every August and he took this responsibility very seriously. It was an honor to work with him.

Doc Casssidy, by far the the best 'loop' ever at WRCC. Not only was a great golfer but he played the game in a unique style that was truly his own. He was a kind and considerate man, treated the caddies so well. Keep swinging in heaven 'Doc".

Cassidy Family,

Your father was a wonderful person. I adored him as my doctor. And if it wasn't for living at Park Lane apartments and becoming friends with most of you, I would never of had my beautiful three daughters or my babysitter, Martha. I have great memories of going to his office and always being treated so well by June, Rosemary and your dad. May all the memories of a great human being, doctor, and dad keep him in your hearts forever. Thank you for sharing him with all his patients. I can't say enough about what a wonderful doctor he was. Thoughts and prayers and love.
