Joan Valente Obituary

Valente, Joan E.
ALBANY - Joan E. Zangrando Valente entered Eternal Life on Saturday, April 13, 2024. Born April 8, 1930 in Albany, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late William J. Zangrando and Josephine Smith Zangrando.
She was the loving wife for 54 years of the late Angelo E. Valente, who was a WW II Veteran, and fought in the Battle of the Bulge, and was a U.S. Postal Employee. Loving mother of Nina Valente Stegmann, Donna Valente Farber, and honorary third daughter, Debbie Bushey Oropallo. Loving Nonna of Dara, Erik, Joanna, and Kelly. Loving sister of the late big brother William J. Zangrando, Jr. Predeceased by many loving aunts and uncles. Survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Joan had many fond memories of growing up in Albany and having fun with her cousins and at school, St. Mary's School and Holy Names Academy.
Thoughts of becoming a nurse were interrupted with marriage and children. However, she had many jobs in caring for the elderly, working in charitable organizations (Leukemia Society, Heart Association, etc.), and lastly, Agriculture and Markets.
Living in West Albany, she was an active member in her church, teaching Sunday school, and in her community as a Girl Scout leader and Neighborhood Chairman.
Joan had the Irish gift of gab and the Italian love of food.
Her love of family, faith, friends, pets, and family dinners, along with her sense of fun and laughter will always be remembered.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Joan's family Thursday, April 18, 2024, at 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., at Historic Church of St. Mary on Capitol Hill, Lodge and Pine Sts. (Rev. James Lefebvre Way), Albany, N.Y. 12207. Her Funeral Mass will follow at 10:30 a.m.

Dear Nina and Donna,
I live in Massachusetts now, but read the Times Union obituaries every week. I am so sorry to read of your Mom´s passing. I remember her as a very kind, welcoming neighbor on Exchange Street. She was always happy to see me. She was never too busy to show her kittens and chat. She is a good memory in my childhood, an adult who made me feel what I said was important I am grateful to have known her
Very Sincerely, Mary Ann DiPierro-Witmer

Joan was such a sweet sweet lady. Although we didn't see her often, she was always in an upbeat mood. Our last interaction was one warm summer day when I was coming in from my garage and she was going for a walk around the outside of Beltrone on the sidewalk. I gave her my blue hat with a wide brim to shade her from the sun. She was so appreciative, it made me feel good to share it. She loved, and appreciated all of you and admired you as well. Our sincere condolences.
