Marilyn McCarthy Obituary

McCarthy, Marilyn A. TROY Marilyn Anne McCarthy of Troy and Moody Beach, Wells, Maine, passed away on Saturday, May 26, 2012 peacefully at Van Rensselaer Manor following a brief illness. Born on February 7, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Cornelius and Beatrice Reilly McCarthy. Marilyn was a 1950 honor graduate of Catholic Central High School, valedictorian of Albany College of Pharmacy and Union University in 1954 and embarked on a distinguished career as a pharmacist. Her career encompassed employment at Sterling Winthrop, Inc., St. Mary's Hospital, Troy Drug Co., and as chief pharmacist at the Capital District Psychiatric Hospital. In 1984, Marilyn opened her own pharmacy, Lake Pharmacy, and loved serving the West Sand Lake community and was a respected business owner. She was honored to be named a trustee at Albany College of Pharmacy and was regarded as a leader in the pharmaceutical field serving as an officer in the Troy Area Pharmaceutical Society and the Capital District Pharmaceutical Association. Marilyn also belonged to the Moody Beach Association in Wells and was a longtime communicant of St. Paul the Apostle Church in Troy and St. Joseph's Church in Wells and had been active in church activities at both churches. Her special presence will be greatly missed. She loved to travel and one of her favorite destinations was Aruba. Marilyn enjoyed many vacations at the Aruba Beach Club where she had a host of friends from all over the country including her special friends, Pat Mullin and the late Sissy Evers. Marilyn was predeceased by her beloved and best friend, William T. Engel; her parents; her sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Tom Ryan; her brother-in-law, George Policano and her cherished nephew, Matthew Canfield. Survivors include her sister, Joan Policano, of DeWitt, N.Y. and her loving nieces and nephews, Terrence Ryan (Ann), Kathleen Canfield (Paul), Neil Ryan, Dennis Ryan (Mary), Kristine Bennett (Mike), Lynn Howard (David), Lisa Policano (Chris Stevenson), Brendan Ryan (Tina) and their children and grandchildren. Her family would like to extend special thanks to her loyal friends, Nancy O'Brien, Mary Keefe, Bob and DeAnna Christensen, Vicki DiLorenzo and the Albany College of Pharmacy for their care and concern through the years, as well as the staff at Van Rensselaer Manor for the outstanding care and compassion Marilyn received during her stay there. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, 106 New Scotland Ave., Albany, NY 12208 in memory of Marilyn A. McCarthy. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 31, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Victory Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Randall Patterson. Interment will follow a the Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery. A calling hour will take place at the church from 10-11 a.m. prior to the Mass. Arrangements are under the direction of Doran Funeral Home.

Marilyn loved her time at the Albany College of Pharmacy and all the friends she made in the profession throughout the years. She love to reminisce about her time being a pharmacist. She will be missed.
