Matthew Canfield Obituary

Canfield, Matthew T. TROY Our beautiful boy, Matthew Thomas Canfield, died tragically on April 1, 2011. Matt was born on a bright, sunny day, August 15, 1976. He was the dearly beloved only son of Kathleen Ryan Canfield and Paul Canfield. He was the best son parents could ever hope for and had a heart as big as the sky. We will hold dear the years that we had with Matt as they were a treasured gift. He was a mere 34 years young when God called him home. Matt also leaves behind his heartbroken sister, Kristy, who always admired him for his strength in meeting adversity. He also leaves behind his canine family members, Toby and Abbie who he dearly loved. Matt's parents and sister can barely imagine what life without him will be and will remember him in so many ways for the rest of their lives. Matt attended Troy schools and graduated from Troy High. He spent many years playing baseball in Brunswick Little League and was forever proud of a no hitter that he pitched there. Matt also leaves behind a large grief stricken family of aunts and uncles who were crazy about their charismatic and fun loving nephew. They include Terry and Ann Ryan, Neil Ryan, Dennis and Mary Ryan, Kris and Mike Bennett, and Brendan and Tina Ryan. He shared a special friendship with each one of his uncles. Matt also loved his numerous cousins and the feeling was mutual. They grew up playing ball together in Gram and Grampy's yard, laughing at holiday dinners and just enjoying each other's company. Matt held a special place in his heart for his special cousin Cate, who gave birth shortly after Matt left this earth. We are certain that their paths crossed in this journey and that Matt let the new little one know what a special family that she was entering. Besides his family Matt cherished his legion of friends, many who were childhood friends, but many others gained as he traveled through this world. They were the best friends that anyone could ever ask for and his family will be forever grateful for the outpouring of sympathy and kindness expressed over his loss by his friends. Spending time with friends was something Matt loved to do along with cooking, and traveling. He loved sports, especially Ohio State and Oklahoma. March Madness will never be the same for his friends without him. Most people did not look forward to Monday morning but Matt loved his work family. He had just celebrated 10 years of service with the Department of Labor. People instantly loved Matt wherever he went and the state was no exception. They took him under their wing and it has been reported that he has at least fifty heartbroken "work Moms". Knowing this has given his family great solace. Matt always lived his life believing that you should make the most out of each day because you never really knew when it would end and for that we are grateful. He was greeted at the gates of heaven by his late grandparents, Ruth and Thomas Ryan who adored him. Also wagging their tails and waiting to greet him at the Rainbow Bridge were Killy and his favorite pet Jordy. Our Matt was a kind and gentle soul who both gave and was the recipient of many acts of kindness in his brief time here on earth. In his memory his family asks that you pass an act of kindness along to someone else who could benefit from it. The family asks if you would like to make a donation in Matt's memory to consider the Mohawk and Hudson River Humane Society, 3 Oakland Avenue, Menands, NY 12204. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 7 at Our Lady of Victory Church in Troy where a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11:00 a.m. Friends and relatives are invited and may call on Wednesday evening from 4-8 p.m. at the Doran Funeral Home, 9 So. Lake Avenue in Troy.

Matt,
By now I'm sure you've spun a no-hitter or two in the Great Here After League. When you throw a
no-hitter you don't need guys like Babe Ruth and Hank Aaron for offense, so perhaps a few so-so ballplayers can play on your squad. RIP Bro!

Hey Matt,
I'm sure you've found your way around upstairs and have made a slew of new friends. I know there's some big hitters like Babe Ruth and Hank Aaron up there to provide some offense when you're on the mound but keep in mind that there's a bunch of us so-so hitters that will be joining your team in the future and will be looking for some playing time. I'll be looking forward to seeing Ruth and Aaron but mostly looking forward to seeing you Brother!

Matt,
It is hard to believe that five years have gone by without you here with us. How I have often wished that I could have changed something, anything, about that last day that would have changed the outcome and kept you here with us.The "what ifs" and "if only" were phrases that I came to know as a grieving mother that occupied a large part of my thoughts especially in the first year, and still now at times. I am not going to write today about what your loss has meant to us because anyone that ever knew us already knows that it is immeasurable. Today I want you to know how beautiful of a gift it was in how you were remembered by so many on the fifth anniversary of your passing.I want you to know that you touched so many people in your life just by being the beautifully authentic person that you were. I want you to know that your kindness to others has come back to us ten fold and what a blessing that has been.I want you to know that in the years that have gone by those incredible friends of yours have taken you with them in spirit to their weddings, special occasions, March Madness trips. Our family and friends have stayed with us in our grief journey and surrounded us with love and care. Most of all they have tried to understand what they have never experienced, the loss of a child, which in itself is not really explainable. There is a saying "that we are all just walking each other home". I want you to know how many truly beautiful people that you left for us to take that walk with. I love you Matt. Love, Your mom

Matt, Every breath we mere humans take brings us a little closer to our eventual reunion in the great Hereafter. We know you've gotten there before us and have had a head start working on your selection of pitches. Take it easy on us the first few games if you will until we get caught up. Better yet, if you can pull some strings up there ( which I'm sure you can ) make sure I'm on your team right from the start. Until then, Rick, Tom, Dan and myself will celebrate having been part of your life in the physical realm down here. See you down the road Uncle Corms.

I'll be wearing it to the LABOR picnic this year as I did last year and will do EVERY future year I'm able to attend. Have you pitched any no-hitters yet in the Big League in the Sky? Matt worked in my building at DOL, in the same office as my mom. When I went to visit my mom, he always had a hello and a smile. Although I did not know him very well, it was obvious that he had a kind heart. About two weeks ago, it was late in the work day and I was craving a butterscotch hard candy. I went down to my mom's desk to see if she had any and she did not. Later, Matt commented to my mom that it seemed late in the day for a visit from me. My mom told him why I had come down. He went back to his desk and found three butterscotch candies and told my mom to give them to me. She did. I sent him an e-mail thanking him and he wrote back "Any time". Mr. & Mrs. Canfield, you raised a very kind and thoughtful son. I am truly sorry for your loss.

I worked in the same building with Matt but only knew him through football pools. He somehow found out I liked to get in them & just appeared at my desk a few years ago to ask if I'd like to join. Since then, we've chatted about the games when we bumped into each other. I would frequently see him on break sitting by the escalators. He always had a smile on his face & a friendly greeting. I didn't know him as well as many others but I could see how sweet & genuine he was. I was deeply saddened to hear of his tragic death. My thoughts & prayers are with his family.

Paul, Kathy, Kristy and the whole Canfield and Ryan family, Words can not express the grief you are feeling. We feel it too. Our office is not the same. I don't think it ever will be. Matt was such a one of a kind person. He had a super personality. He loved people. He always said he would never leave our office. He had it all, why look for anything else e once said. He was like a little brother to me. He LOVED to tease. I would tease right back. I know he loved it... I did too. It's not the same without him... I miss him so.

Matty, I know you have other plans in Heaven. Watch over us. Love ya kid...
