Matthew Conlin, born on August 1, 1957, passed away peacefully in his sleep, at his home in Malta, N.Y., on August 17, 2024, after a long illness. Matt was known for his steady, consistent presence in the lives of those who knew him. Surrounded by beloved family and friends at the end, he was supported on his journey to the other side with love and care.
Matt is predeceased by his parents, William and Mary Ellen Conlin; and his eldest sibling, Kevin. He is survived by his daughter, Chelsea Conlin (Nick Tausek); one sister, Martha Houde (Charles "Butch"); and four brothers, Peter, Paul (Debbie Hoellerich), Jamie (Lily), and Andrew (Patsy Schutz). He also leaves behind many aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews, as well as his longtime friends, Donna Conlin and Sharyl Stanley.
Matt grew up on Long Island with his parents and siblings, before moving to the north country of N.Y. as a teenager, eventually graduating from New Lebanon High School. He married his high school sweetheart, Donna, who remained a devoted friend, caring for him in his final moments. Matt had a deep love for sports, drawing, and music. In his early years, he was an active tennis player, enjoying time with his family at the well-known Conlin compound in New Lebanon, N.Y. - a place of joy for many family members and friends.
For 40 years, Matt worked with dedication at National Gypsum Corporation, in East Greenbush, N.Y., leaving his post only upon retirement when the plant was shuttered. His consistent and reliable manner made him a cherished colleague and friend. Matt was known for his thoughtful and caring conversations, which left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
In keeping with Matt's wishes, there will be no public services. Instead, local celebrations of life will be held in different locations to honor the life of this wonderful father, husband, brother, uncle, friend, and colleague.
In his final act of selflessness, Matt donated his remains as an anatomical gift, hoping to contribute to the advancement of science and help others, even in his passing.
