Matthew Dunn Obituary

Dunn, Matthew
DELMAR - Matthew Robert Dunn, 49, passed away on May 22, 2024, in his residence of Delmar, N.Y. Matthew was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey, to loving parents, Christine Dunn and the late Robert Dunn.
First and foremost, Matthew, was a caring father to his daughters and always wanted the best for them. Matthew enjoyed golfing, cycling and spending time being a "fun dad" with his girls (the light of his life). He was a huge fan of Florida Gators college football and Star Wars.
His children both have fond memories. Madelyn's fondest memory was watching the Dark Knight while baking cookies and making milkshakes. Emily's fondest memory was when dad came to her softball game; she hit her first and only homerun. Matthew told Emily to get the ball signed by her teammates, and bought her a plastic cube for display that she has to this day.
Matthew attended the University of Florida from 1994-1997, followed by Albany Law School from 1997-2000.
His entire career was devoted to the New York State Court of Appeals. Matthew served as a law clerk to the Hon. Victoria Graffeo, then as senior legal editor with the Law Reporting Bureau.
In addition to his mother, survivors include his daughters, Madelyn Dunn and Emily Dunn; and siblings, Andrew (Rachel) Dunn and Sarah (John) Nelson; and nephew, Drew Dunn.
Friends and family are invited to call at Wm. J. Rockefeller Funeral Home, Inc., 165 Columbia Turnpike, Rensselaer, N.Y. 12144, on Thursday, June 20, 2024, from 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. A service will follow in the funeral home at 6 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Second Chance Opportunities, Inc., 55 Colvin Ave., Albany, N.Y. 12206.

It´s your daughter, Emily. It´s been hard without you- thinking about how this will be my first Christmas and birthday without you, and my Spanish teacher even has the same birthday as you! I sometimes think that there must have been something that I could´ve done to keep you alive and safe, but I know that you going to whatever afterlife there may be where you can be healed is much better than suffering in the world. After you died, I got angry at you because I didn´t know why you had to die. It was my own selfish desires for you to stay but I´ve grown since then. I remember how I knew you´d died when mom came up to me almost crying and how when I asked if it´s about dad she just told me we´d talk at home. I was eating lucky charms on the couch while holding your blue Nike shirt. It´s been painful since you died, but it´s also been so amazing knowing you´re ok and healthy now. Thank you for being the best father I could´ve asked for.<3

Maddie and Emily love you so much and your dad always said everything I do is for my girls. He loved you both so much. Also much love Connie for the hope you kept in your heart and the love for your beautiful girls. One of the best memories was Poppy and your dad doing the slingshot at the Steel Pier in Atlantic City we laughed so hard. We are here for you all always

A big part of my childhood was spent exploring the beaches, lagoons, and woods with my big cousin, Matt. We rode big wheels, bikes, and boogie boards. We flew kites, climbed the lighthouse, and watched the fishing boats come in. We chased crabs under the docks, climbed trees, and jumped off of roofs. I will always be thankful for that time together with him, wandering and wondering through early childhood. Thanks for the adventures, Matt. You will be remembered.

Matt was a supportive colleague and friend when our paths crossed at the Court of Appeals and more recently at the LRB. Our kids are similar ages and we would chat about school and such. He will be missed. My condolences to Matt's family.

I remember while working at Critter Fleet in Ponce Inlet during our junior high years, stopping by Matt´s house just down the street from the lighthouse. and playing basketball with him and his brother Andy. We loved basketball and Air Jordan apparel. While attending Silver Sands Jr. High. we would play ball on the outdoor courts, then walk over to the indoor courts at the Port Orange gym and play until dark. RIP Matt. Our condolences to his family.
