Michael Mulholland Obituary

Mulholland, Michael Martin SARATOGA SPRINGS Michael Martin Mulholland passed away on October 25, 2021, at the age of 74, in his hometown of Saratoga Springs. Forged by a lifetime full of invaluable experiences, Mike was a father figure to many, a horse racing fanatic, and always quick with a joke. The self-proclaimed inventor of House Special Lo Mein (a dubious assertion subject to considerable historical dispute), he was also a gifted storyteller and writer, an aficionado of classic movies, and the best friend a dog could ever hope to have. Born on January 14, 1947, Mike was the eldest of seven children. His mother, Irene, was a tough but doting war bride that fell in love with Mike's father, Maurice "Buddy" Mulholland, while he was serving in England during World War II. Mike grew up in his family's home on Saratoga's West Side and graduated from Saratoga High School. It was during his senior year that he met the love of his life, Janet, at a Saturday night school dance held at St. Peter's Academy. After high school, Mike attended SUNY Delhi and earned his degree in mechanical engineering. Unimpressed by this accomplishment, the Army drafted him anyway and sent him on an all-expense-paid trip to Vietnam. Mike completed basic training at Fort Dix and advanced infantry training at Fort Jackson, then he was off to specialized training at British Jungle Warfare School in Malaysia. His training complete, Mike reported to the 101st Airborne Division as a member of the 557th Combat Tracker Platoon, primarily serving his tour of duty in the A Shau Valley of Vietnam. Although faced with the challenges of war, Mike's experiences honed his maturity, provided him with numerous life-long friends, and afforded a near-bottomless well of stories for those lucky enough to be within earshot. He served proudly alongside his beloved tracker dog Biz, a truly formative experience that often shaped the stories he told, and the two built a bond that culminated in Biz springing an ambush to save Mike's life at the cost of his own. Throughout Mike's tour in Vietnam, the girl from that high school dance never left his thoughts. Despite the dangers afforded by infantry combat, Mike returned safely home to his beloved Janet, and distance had not diminished their love for each other. They were married on December 6, 1969, at St. Clement's Church in Saratoga Springs, and began building their lives together. They welcomed their first son, Ian, in July of 1972. They continued to build their family with the arrival of daughters Katie and Rita, and son Mikey, in the decade that followed. Mike found his calling working with mechanical systems, drawing on his education in mechanical engineering to quickly progress through an apprenticeship to become a licensed master plumber. He hung out his shingle and opened his own business, finding a way to merge two of his passions: mechanical systems and serving his community. Elements of his business philosophy at On Call Plumbing and HVAC were defined by the depth of his caring and a commitment to serving others, and he considered employees and customers to be extended family and valued friends. Mike's ethos established a legacy to continue serving the community that he loved despite his passing. In his leisure time Mike enjoyed the excitement afforded by horse racing, an interest built on time spent with his father and from working at Saratoga Race Course during his formative years. The racing atmosphere, the thrill of cheering a sprint down the stretch, and the spirit of those noble horses all fueled his boundless enthusiasm for the sport. Not content to merely stand at the rail and watch, Mike tried his hand at horse breeding, and he was named the 1985 New York State Breeder of the Year for Turf Fillies and Mares for his stakes-winning horse "Wimborne Sky." Mike's love of the sport afforded countless fond memories to friends and family, from roving the back stretch at the track to enjoying warm summer days listening to the races by the pool. Mike was preceded in death by his mother, Irene; father, Maurice; sisters, Martha and Victoria; and son, Ian. Remaining to celebrate his legacy are his wife, Janet; children, Katie (DJ), Rita, and Mikey (Jennifer); and brothers, Mark (Denise), Paul, Jimmy (Sharon), Joey (Tammy), and de facto brother, Dennis. Also carrying Mike's memory forward are six grandchildren, Austin, Michael, Kaitlyn, Kelly, Jonathan, and Mallory and a wealth of nephews and nieces. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff of Saratoga Hospital for the tremendously heartfelt care they gave to Mike. Those wishing to pay their respects are invited to call from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 2, at the William J. Burke & Sons Funeral Home, 628 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs. Everyone in attendance will be required to wear a face mask or covering. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, please consider a charitable donation to the Old Friends at Cabin Creek thoroughbred retirement farm at www.oldfriendsatcabincreek.com. Online remembrances may be made at www.burkefuneralhome.com.

I was so saddened to learn of Mike's passing. What a great guy he was! Humble, compassionate, caring, funny and a great story teller! Many times I would call the plumbing shop, Mike would answer and after an hour or so of talking horses, we would eventually get around to scheduling my plumbing job. Such a font of knowledge about so many topics, and an encyclopedic memory for horse races and thoroughbred breeding. A great loss for all who were fortunate to know him.....

We just learned of Michael's passing and send our love and condolences to all the family. Mike shared with us an essay that he wrote about his service in Vietnam; we were so impressed with his writing and so moved that he shared it with us. He knew Frank was a vet, too and would understand his experiences.
To Paul, our friend for so many years- we send our love. We are so sad that we were unaware of your brother's death and the date for the wake...we would have liked to have seen you and support you with our friendship.
Mike was a kind, humble man, with deep emotion. We enjoyed his company and didn't share it enough.
God bless you and keep you all, and God rest his sensitive soul.

Dear Janet and family, I was so very sorry to hear about Mike's passing. I remember all the years I babysat for the kids... Janet would still be getting ready to go out on one of their "date nights" and Mike would be waiting for her in the living room and pass the time by sharing some hysterical story about the family from that week. He was a great guy. My thoughts and prayers are with you and the entire family. All my love, Rita

Mike helped me many years ago when I needed a furnace part. The shop was closed but he was still in his car in the lot. He unlocked the shop and let me look around the old inventory for the part I needed. I found it on the floor and he said I could have it at no charge. It worked perfectly. After that I stopped by the shop to hear some of Mike's stories and just talk to him. He was a very special person and I will miss him a lot!

So sad to hear about Mike. He led a great life surrounded by a great family. My parents were friends with Mike’s parents, Bud and Irene. Mike and my brother Peter were longtime friends and schoolmates, and Martha and I graduated SHS in 1967. I have fond memories of many visits to their grocery store on Clinton St., back when a neighborhood grocery store meant something. My thoughts are with Janet and the entire Mulholland family.

Seems like only yesterday Mike and I were discussing and singing along with Dr John's "Such a Night" and "Right place wrong time". Love of music is what Mike and I had in common. The news of Mikes passing hit very hard with Susan and I. As a past employee of Mike and Janet's and early on a Salesman calling on the Mulholland's, I was one of those lucky enough to be within earshot of his stories, Jokes and classic whimsy. There was never a dull day on 99 Walworth Street. I was never good at saying goodbyes but in my best Cockney accent one last time "Love ya mate"

Mike, we first met in October of 1968, in the 557th Combat Tracker base at Camp Eagle. I knew you were someone special right away by the way you always had a good word to say to everyone, it was like meeting a stranger and walking away as a life long friend. I love you Brother and I'll miss your voice on the phone. Mac McDonald

I grew up down the street from the Mulhollands and they were the nicest people imaginable. Always greeted you with big smiles on their faces. Always happy to see you. Need help, Mike was there. Although it's been a few years since I've seen him, I have always had fond thoughts of the whole family. I also knew Janet when we were kids. Funny how life works out when two people you knew as a child find each other as partners in life. Sending prayers of sympathy and love to Janet and the whole Mulholland family.

I'm so sorry to hear of Mike's passing. I was referred to Mike years ago when I needed some plumbing, and soon discovered what an interesting and joyful person he was. Classic French movies, literature, dogs, hydrology -- I don't know many people who are drawn to drop by their plumber just to have a chat, but I was and did. He was always welcoming. He'll be missed.

Like losing a father, Mike was a truly caring role model for many.
I will never forget the story’s of the war, his understated accomplishments that saved lives and his love of everything saratoga.
And never was there a time where he would not sit and talk, give me time and share his to discuss history, current events, problems and options for solutions.
My friend, I will miss you and will never forget the lessons you taught me as well as others.
Our condolences Janet and family. So truly sad.
