Paul Osterdahl Obituary

Osterdahl, Paul R. Sr. M.D. NORTH GREENBUSH Dr. Paul R. Osterdahl Sr., M.D., 68, died suddenly on Sunday, February 6, 2022, at Albany Medical Center. He was born in Otisville, N.Y. on June 11, 1953, the son of the late Evert and Evelyn Miller Osterdahl. Paul was raised with his five siblings by his aunt Emma after losing their father and mother at a young age. He was a graduate of Otisville High School in 1971, SUNY Oneonta in 1975, and the Albert Einstein Medical School at Yeshiva University in the Bronx in 1979. He rose from humble beginnings to become an exemplary obstetrician-gynecologist who his patients adored. Paul served his residency at Albany Medical Center in OB-GYN from 1979-1984. He later served as the chief of OB-GYN at Albany Medical Center. He worked in private practice with Gabriels & Wallingford that later became Albany OB-GYN, which he currently was affiliated with. He was a member of the American Congress of OB-GYN. He loved his work and never grew tired of bringing new life into the world and continued practicing until his death. It was truly his calling. He saw every child as a gift from God. Paul loved nothing more than his family. His kindness, empathy, selflessness, and caring made him a wonderful husband, father, Didi and physician. He taught his children and granddaughters the true meaning of love. Despite being drafted, by the grace of God and government inefficiency, he was spared being sent to Vietnam. Paul was peaceful and content outdoors, especially at his camp on Indian Lake. He was an avid fisherman and spent many happy years trolling for lake trout and casting for bass on his old pontoon boat. He considered Disney World his second home and cherished the time he spent there with his family. He loved playing yard games, board games, and going to the movies with his children. As a child, Bob Hayes was his hero, so he went on to become a diehard Dallas Cowboys football fan. One of his last memories was seeing them play against the Eagles with his son. Paul loved to tinker and could fix anything, and, despite struggling with technology, he was proud of his ability to use YouTube as his guide to repair things. He was a kind and gentle soul, and never saw anything bad in people. He would help anyone. His smile and humor were infectious. He is survived by the love of his life, Dr. Deborah A. Hrustich. Their first date was on February 24, 1980, at the USA vs Finland gold medal championship hockey game in Lake Placid. They later married on August 4, 1984, in Saratoga Springs. Paul was the devoted father of Katherine Osterdahl (Dustin Kudler) of West Sand Lake, Dr. Paul R. Osterdahl Jr. (Dr. Melissa Gott) of Vineland, N.J. and Jacqueline E. Osterdahl (Charles Mullen) of Leominster, Mass.; grandfather and best Didi ever of Eleanor Rose Kudler, Althea Mae Kudler and Freya Skye Mullen; and dear brother of Evert Osterdahl of Saratoga Springs, Mary (David) Southern of Otego, N.Y., Julia (Carl) Vreeland of Otisville, N.Y., Anthony Osterdahl of Sweden and the late Mark (wife Bonnie survives) Osterdahl. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. The funeral Mass will be on Friday at 11 a.m. in the Parish of Mater Christi, 40 Hopewell St., Albany with Reverend John F. Tallman officiating. Entombment will follow in the Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery in Niskayuna. Relatives and friends are invited and may call also at the Parish of Mater Christi in Albany on Thursday from 4-7 p.m. Masks are required to be worn. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the March of Dimes, 4 Computer Drive West, #201, Albany, NY, 12205, or to Rensselaer Plateau Alliance, Inc., P.O. Box 790, Averill Park, NY, 12018. This is a delayed response, but a heartfelt one. When I read the email with the unbelievable news of Dr. Osterdahl's passing, so many emotions went through me. He had been my doctor since I got married 38 years ago, went through my infertility with me, and shared in the joy of my daughter finally arriving . My yearly visits with him were always a joy, he always took a few minutes to shoot the breeze about what was new before getting down to business. He was such a bright light and I miss him terribly. I am sending so much sympathy to the entire family on this loss of a very sweet man.

Dr. Osterdahl was a warm, caring, humorous, and unforgettable doctor. He was not my primary doctor in the practice, but I did have the pleasure of being seen by him over the course of my pregnancy back in 2005. He was easy to talk to and always made me feel comfortable. During our conversations, I made it known that I really wanted an epidural since I didn´t get one for my previous delivery. The day I went into labor, I barely made it to the hospital on time and delivered in about 10 minutes of arriving at the hospital (too late to get that epidural). The doctor on call delivered my baby and a few minutes later, Dr. Osterdahl arrived and poked his head in the delivery room, smiled at me, and said, "you want that epidural now?" I am saddened to hear of his passing and will always fondly remember him. My condolences to his family and coworkers. Prayers of comfort and peace to all those mourning the loss of a truly remarkable person. RIP, Dr. Osterdahl-you left quite an impression on so many people and will be dearly missed.

It is with a sad heart that we heard of the sudden passing of Dr. Osterdahl. Although he was not my wife's doctor he indeed saw her while she was pregnant , and we had the pleasure of his humor and calmness. He was her delivering doctor on both our kids. His medical training must've rubbed off a little as our son Robert is now a chief internal medicine doctor in Rochester and his 2nd delivery 3.5 years later, our daughter Kelly is an OT in Albany,NY. A funny story---- Dr.O was doing a C-section at St. Peter's in November of 91' and Kelly and my wife were in the next room with Kelly coming quick. Staff called in Dr. Wallingford as a quick backup cause 2 kids were coming at about the same time. So just as Wallingford is getting to deliver our daughter and scrubbed in, Dr. O comes crashing through another door ready to deliver Kelly. So the 2 doctors looked at each other and Dr. O says----I'll flip you for it. Lol. And Dr. Wallingford says --- it's all yours, your the one on call. Hahaha. They were both wonderful men and Dr. Osterdahl did a great job on both deliveries and kept it a fun experience for the "dad" who is a medical person also, but never saw that before, and still till this day were the greatest miracles I've ever seen. RIP Dr. Osterdahl, thank you for my kids, and God Bless your family at this difficult time

Condolences from me and the many resident Ob/Gyn physicians that he helped train. I still remember exactly how he liked to do his cesarean sections, how he liked to chew gum and his patient humorous style of teaching. We all benefited immensely from operating under his guidance. What a pleasure to read his patient´s comments in remembrance.
With sympathy, Liz Kelly, MD (AMC `13).

I was so shocked and saddened to hear of Dr. Osterdahl´s passing. I have been a patient of his for more than 30 years. He truly was an outstanding doctor who had a wonderful bedside manner and always made me feel at ease. For almost 30 yrs I was a patient of Dr. Osterdahl. When I was pregnant for my now 12 yr old daughter, I went to him and made him promise that he would deliver my baby. He couldn't understand why I only wanted to see him for my appointments. He made it happen and kept his promise. He was a bit late for my c section, I joked and asked if he was playing golf. He was the most funny and caring Doctor I have ever had. At my last appointment this past November, I told him how great he looked. I asked him what his secret for not aging was. We laughed and he said what I really want to know is who checks your frickin eyes. In true Dr. Osterdahl fashion always cracking a joke. I asked him about plant based diets. He replied "I like BACON, really like bacon" He was always making me laugh. He was one of a kind and will truly be missed. Dr. Osterdahl I hope you rest in peace, you were my favorite Doctor for so many reasons. I still laugh about when you told me that the dermoid cyst on my ovary was the "yuckiest thing you have ever seen and made me promise to never grow another one" I will never have another Doctor like you. Thanks for being so real and honest. I will really miss you! My thoughts and prayers go out to Dr. Osterdahl's family and everyone that loved him. He was a special man and will be missed by so many.

I met Dr. O when he delivered my nephew in 1998. I was in such awe that I dropped my sister's leg and Dr. O brought me back to earth with his humor. When his colleague, who delivered my babies, retired, I knew I would request Dr. O. I only saw him for a few years, but his love and respect for women and children was obvious. His humor, always perfectly timed, never masked professionalism. My heart is heavy and my thoughts are with his family.

He and Judy are together again and I am sure my husband was there to greet him - Gary left this earth just like Paul with no chance to say goodbye - my heart aches for all of your family. RIP

Paul you will be missed. You were an amazing Doctor and I so enjoyed working with you. Your humor got us through the busy times in labor and delivery. It was so wonderful to see how you beamed when your grandchild was born. You made the world a better place.

I've been his patient for 43 years. He was so easy to talk to, and always had a smile. He always made me feel comfortable. He genuinely cared when he asked about your family, which meant a lot to me. Thoughts and prayer go out to the family.

I am shocked and saddened by the lose of Dr. Osterdahl. I was a patient for almost 40 years. He had the best personality and sense of humor. He never rushed our appointments, he always asked me about my kids and grandkids, he knew them by name. He loved his kids and grandchildren so much. We would talk about them too. He said he loved walking around Disney World with his Goofy hat on.
The kindness he extended to my mom when she was in the hospital dying from ovarian cancer. He went to visit him on his own time and sat and talked to her a a long while. My mom was so happy. He went above and beyond!! I will remember him always. God bless Paul and his family.
