Robert Caswell Obituary

Caswell, Robert Sr.
GREEN ISLAND - Robert T. Caswell Sr., passed peacefully from this life on Thursday, June 19, 2025, at the age of 82. Born in Troy, Bob was a life-long resident of Green Island. He was son of the late Spencer and Alice (McDonald) Caswell, and loving husband of the late Gail M. (Vanderheyden) Caswell, with whom he shared 58 years of marriage before her passing in 2022. A graduate of Heatly High School in Green Island, Bob went on to serve his country in the United States Navy. During his enlistment, he served on board the USS Newport (LST 1179) and the USS Intrepid (CV-11). He was honorably discharged on August 3, 1963, and returned home to Green Island. Soon after, Bob married Gail, and they began a family. He took employment with Bendix in Green Island and Grand Union in Waterford and in 1969, joined the Green Island Police Department as a police officer. He was promoted to Sergeant in 1978 and retired from full-time employment in 1990. He continued to work in a part-time capacity for several years, while also serving as a Callman for the Green Island Fire Department, a position he held until his retirement in 2010. Never idle, Bob also was employed by Siena College in Loudonville for more than 40 years, where he worked in events, security and on the grounds. For the past three years, he was employed by the Franklin Plaza in Troy. Bob was a member of the Vagabond Club in Green Island and the Legnard-Curtain Post # 927 American Legion in Green Island. He was a member of the former St. Joseph's Church in Green Island. Bob devoted much of his life to his family and always found time to be at his children's, grandchildren's and great-grandchildren's activities and events. He was their biggest supporter. Bob loved camping from an early age, spending his childhood summers at Babcock Lake. Later, he would share his love of the outdoors with his children and their families, at Johnson's Pond, in Newcomb, N.Y., and at Schroon River Campground. He enjoyed giving back to his community through volunteerism and involvement and he loved being a resident of Green Island. Bob's retirement years were filled with happy times spent with family and his friends and neighbors at the Cornerstone Apartments and his Tuesday and Thursday lunches with Lucy. In quiet times, he had a passion for creating diamond paintings. Bob is survived by his children, Julie (Daniel) Lacijan, Robert (Roberta) Caswell and Nick Caswell; his grandchildren, Eden Brannigan, Alexa Jura, Gabriela and Shayna Lacijan, Donald Ketzer, Jesse (Amanda) Ketzer, Sarah Reichart, Cory Caswell and Hannah (Tyler) Slager. He was heartbroken at the loss of his grandson, Shane Daniel Lacijan, who died at an early age. He was brother of Maureen Caswell and the late Spencer Caswell. He also leaves behind 19 great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter, and a special long-time family friend, Sandra Connery; who provided much support and friendship to Bob and his family during his illness. Bob's funeral will be held on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, at 10 a.m., from the Parker Bros. Memorial, in Watervliet, and at 11 a.m., in St. Mary of the Angels Chapel on the campus of Siena College in Loudonville, where Bob's long-time friend, Father Dennis E. Tamburello O.F.M., will celebrate his funeral Mass. The Rite of Committal and interment will immediately follow in Memory Gardens, Colonie, where Bob will be laid to rest alongside his beloved Gail. Friends are invited to attend and may visit with Bob's family, on Monday, June 23, 2025, from 4 until 7 p.m., at the funeral home.
