STILLWATER - Robert J. McCarthy, 72, of Castle Drive, died peacefully at the Washington Center in Argyle, on November 5, 2023, after a lengthy illness, with his loving family by his side.
Born on February 10, 1951, the son of the late Robert R. and Mary Crimmins McCarthy, he was a 1969 graduate of Glens Falls High School and a graduate of the University of New England in Biddeford, Maine.
Bob was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who always put his family first and loved spending time with them. He enjoyed a 36-year career as a school teacher for the Hoosic Valley School District and touched so many of his students' lives. He taught many grade levels, ending his career with kindergarten students. His love of teaching was not limited to the classroom as Bob was a JV basketball and baseball coach for the district and an assistant coach for his son Kevin's soccer and little league teams. He also worked as a pari-mutuel clerk for the Saratoga Harness Track for 41 years.
Some of his favorite things he enjoyed doing were traveling with his wife Gail and dining out with her. He also liked playing and watching most sports although baseball was his favorite. Bob loved the ocean and the warm sunshine. He was a kind, generous and caring soul and always took care of other people before himself. He knew everyone and was easy to talk to and had a great sense of humor. Bob was adored by so many people. In the words of his granddaughter, Abby, "He was the best part of everyone's day."
Bob is survived by his wife of 52 years, Gail Evans McCarthy, whom he married on August 7, 1971; his daughter, Cheryl Peters of St. Augustine, Fla.; his son, Kevin McCarthy of Corinth; his grandchildren, Abigail, Hannah, and Jack Peters; his sister, Donna (Robert) Sullivan of Glens Falls; Larissa, Evan and Layla, whom he treated as his own grandchildren; as well as several in-laws, nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held at the DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 S. Main St., Mechanicville on Friday, November 10, from 4-7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, November 11, at 10 a.m. in All Saints on the Hudson (Saint Peter's Church), 895 Hudson Ave., Stillwater, with burial to follow in Stillwater Union Cemetery.
