I was in Mr. West´s orchestra at Hicksville Junior High School for the 1964-1965, 1965-1966, 1966-67 school years. I played cello.
Mr. West was a lovely man who was an excellent, dedicated teacher & an amazing musician.
He loved music & taught us, his students, to enjoy & love music too. Because of him & all the music he exposed us to, I was inspired to purchase subscription tickets to the NY Philharmonic for myself & my husband since the year 2000.
I remember during our orchestra rehearsals Mr. West would verbally explain how he wanted us to play the music & he then would usually borrow the concert mistress´ violin to play what he was talking about; an excellent way to teach & an incredible opportunity to hear his amazing musicianship.
My parents wanted me to own a cello but didn´t know how to go about procuring an appropriate instrument. Mr. West very kindly helped my parents find me a beautiful cello & bow with a lovely, mellow tone that was also affordable.
How wonderful that such a lovely man had such a full life. His family, though definitely missing him, must be so gratified to have had him in their lives.
My heart is broken for your loss.
With deepest sympathy,

Robert West was my Junior High School orchestra conductor in Hicksville Junior High. I played cello and sat first seat in the orchestra. He was the first teacher I had that truly made an impact on my life. We had a great student teacher relationship and I admired him a great deal especially because he was into cars like I was as a kid. It was so cool having a young guy teacher that drove a gorgeous Corvette. He chose me as one of the students during "Fine Arts Week" picked to attend the University of Vermont on a summer music camp scholarship. I loved it so much I attended two more years on my own. I continued playing the cello for many, many years but regrettably did not make music a career. I thought about Mr. West often and actually had a dream about him last night, dreaming about how old he might be and that he might still be alive. So this morning I decided to check. So sorry to hear of his passing but so happy to read about the full, happy life he seems to have had. The motorcycle doesn´t surprise me but so many of his wonderful hobbies and interests do and are many of the same things that interest me. Would love to have seen him again and tell him what he meant to me growing up. Will just have to trust he´s seeing it as I´m writing it. So sorry for your loss. He was a loss in my life as well.
