William Tibbits Obituary

Tibbits, William Badger John WASHINGTON, DC William Badger John Tibbits, 85, born August 17, 1924, died December 12, 2009 from complications due to a stroke on June 26, 2006. Born in Canada, he was the youngest child of the late Rev. John Knox Tibbits, retired rector of the All Saints Episcopal Church in Hoosick, N.Y., and the late Marguerite Vinton Harris Tibbits where they lived for a few years. He was beloved husband of Svetlana Orekhova-Tibbits, Ph.D. The Tibbits family held a special place in the history of Troy. Bill was a great grandson of the late Congressman George Tibbits - fourth Mayor of Troy, N.Y. and a great nephew of Civil War Brigadier General William Tibbits. Bill graduated from Fay and Pomfret Schools in New England, earned a bachelor degree from the American University and M.A. from Maryland University in Journalism. He was editor-in-chief of the "Military Retirement" magazine of the Pentagon. As a member of the board of trustees of the Hoosac School, a memorial service will be held there in January 2010. Bill held many member positions of note: chairman of Tibbits Historical Foundation, the National Press Club and Fort Myer Officers Club. A communicant of Saint John's Church on Lafayette Square in Washington, D.C. since 1952 where a memorial service will be celebrated at 2:30 p.m. the 21st of December. William was an open person, a man of pure heart. Survivors, in addition to his beloved wife include his sons, William Badger John Tibbits Jr. of Nashville, Tenn. and Henry Bruce Tibbits of Rio Nido, Calif.; his mother-in-law, Alexandra Danilova; his stepchildren, Alexandr and Andrey Orekhov; grandchildren, Agata, Eva and Phillip Orekhov, all of Moscow, Russia; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers and a sister. Funeral service will be held at the All Saints Episcopal Church, NY Route 7 in Hoosick, N.Y. 12089 on Friday, December 18 at 10 a.m. Following the service, there will be an entombment at Oakwood Cemetery, Troy. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Tibbits Historical Foundation, 4705 Colorado Ave., NW., Washington D.C. 20011.
