DAVID MACNAMARA Obituary

MACNAMARA Deacon David Claude MacNamara, who was born September 21,1924 the son of Gerald and Elizabeth MacNamara in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, passed away Saturday, May 11th at St. Vincent's Hospice in the company of his loving family. He was 88 years old. A Marine who served in WWII, David graduated from St. Joseph's College in Philadelphia. He transferred to Jacksonville in 1960 with State Farm Insurance Company. He moved on to become the founding Director of the Greater Jacksonville-Duval County Safety Council and went on to serve as the first Council Secretary to the new, consolidated Jacksonville-Duval County City Council. He later became the Public Safety Director for the city. From 1975 to 1979 he served as the Assistant Secretary of State for the State of Florida. David was ordained a Deacon in the Roman Catholic Church in 1980, the same year he became Vice-Chancellor of the Diocese of St. Petersburg. Deacon Dave returned to Jacksonville in 1989 to resume his public service as Statewide Safety Coordinator for the Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services until his retirement. Following his retirement he served as Chaplain at various places, continuing his ministry until only just a few short months ago. He volunteered as the Chaplain at Christ the King School, the Jacksonville - Duval County School Board, St Catherine Laboure, All Saints Home and St Vincent's Hospital. An active Rotary member, David was a Paul Harris Fellow and the founding President of three Rotary Clubs throughout the state. David hosted a public affairs television show called First Amendment in both Tallahassee and Jacksonville for over two decades. He served for five years as the editor of the Florida Catholic newspaper. He founded the very successful Mary Singleton Society for Peace and Justice and for years ran its annual breakfast to raise educational scholarship money for minority children in need of financial assistance for education. David taught classes at Christ the King Catholic School, Bishop Kenny High School, Jones College and Jacksonville University. He served on many Boards and Commissions and was the only Floridian ever to be appointed by three consecutive Governors spanning an uninterrupted 20 year period of volunteer dedication to the state. He was a member of various local Boards including Edward Waters College, the North Florida Ministerial Association and the Northeast Florida Aids Network. He has been recognized by the Jacksonville Blood Alliance for donated over 200 gallons of blood during his lifetime. David is survived by his devoted wife Mary of over 63 years, a brother Richard MacNamara of Miami and sister-in-laws Margaret Pollock and Kathryn Donze both of Philadelphia as well as 33 nephews and nieces. David is also survived by (and his wife Mary will be comforted by) his seven children: his daughter Mary Lynn Heekin and her husband Rob, his daughter Marty Heekin and her husband Jim, his son Stephen MacNamara and his wife Dr. Liberty Taylor, his daughter Sharon Fechtel and her husband Dr. Doug Fechtel, his daughter Leslie Sares and her husband Jack, his daughter LeeAnn Heekin and her husband Patrick and his daughter Claudia Darnell as well as 22 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. A Memorial Mass will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, May 17th at Christ the King Catholic Church, 742 Arlington Road. The family will receive visitors beginning at 1:00 pm at the church. No burial will take place as David donated his body to the Florida Anatomical Board for use in statewide medical schools. A reception for family and friends will follow immediately in the Christ the King Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family would ask for donations to be made in the memory of David MacNamara to any of the following organizations: Christ the King Catholic School, Bishop Kenny High School or the Community Hospice at St. Vincent Hospital. He will be truly missed by his entire family and his legions of friends and admirers. May he rest in peace! Please Sign the Guestbook @ Jacksonville.com

Steve, sorry it took so long to get to you. I wanted you to know how sorry I am for your loss; it doesn't matter how old we get, it doesn't diminish the feelings. I am sure your Dad was very proud of you, as well as his other kids. Thinking of you, Bert

Dear Mary, MaryLynn, Marty, Stephen, Sharon, Leslie, LeeAnn, and Claudia,

Your husband/father was such an example to me of how to live one's life effectively. His postage-stamp sized sign on his Tallahassee office wall, "There's only one main event," has been a constant reminder to me not to panic when life goes into a spin. He was grounded and bullet-proofed via his faith. His family was his highest priority after God.

I feel so fortunate to have been chosen to work with him in three capacities; he always trusted me more than I trusted myself. My exposure to him helped me to recognize decency, compassion, humility, strength, courage, generosity, and vision (or lack thereof) in others--all qualities I admire and to which I aspire. He truly was a practicing Christian.

My association with him was a privilege that's hard to quantify.

He changed my life.

I am so sorry for your loss.

The lives of many educators are richer, fuller and blessed because of the prayers Deacon MacNamara bestowed on us on many Tuesday evenings. It was an honor to be in his presence. He brought a spirit of peace and compassion to School Board meetings. May God provide the same to his family.

Deacon Dave demonstrated the best of mankind and took the Rotary Motto of "Service Above Self" to heart. He touched virtually every corner of our community. He "walked with kings while never losing the common touch" in his life. I'm sure St. Peter has welcomed him with open arms. Semper Fidelis, Dave. Rest in Peace. God bless your family!

In the short time that I was blessed to know David, I could see that he was a wonderful man, who stood for something, took action in his life, deeply loved his wife, and meant a great deal to his community & his wonderful family.

I'm very sorry for the loss of such a good man. The lord has an honorable & honest man to safely guard his gates now, and for that we thank him.

Thank you for sharing your time with us David. We will sorely miss you.

May 14, 2013

We would like to express our deepest condolences to the MacNamara family. Deacon Dave had a profound impact on our family, helping my father, Al McClellan to become a Catholic. He also assisted my wife, Marita with her conversion through the RCIA program at Christ the King. The MacNamara family has been a close friend to the McClellan family for as long as we've been members of Christ the King parish. He will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family as they grieve their loss, and celebrate his life and the many lives he touched during his journey.

Words can't express how saddened I am to hear of Dave leaving this world. Rest in knowing he will always be watching over each and everyone of us. I'm sure I will never meet another man like Dave. "THE MEASURE OF A MAN: Not - "how did he die" But - "how did he live" Not - "what did he gain" But - "what did he give" These are the units To measure the worth Of a man, as a man, Regardless of birth !"

It does ease with time. Please know your family is in our prayers and thoughts. Fondly, Denny and Toosie Williamson.

I have always considered David Macnamara one of the most people I admired most. I watched his interaction with his wife and children and only hoped to have a family that well grounded. He and Mary made it look easy. I loved Dave and every member of his family. His sense of humor was remarkable and I know he passed it on to Steve. He made a tremendous impact on many lives.
