Dear Josephine and Toni,
I can't quite express how fortunate we are to have had an ever so brief opportunity to know Dr. Newton. He was a remarkable man with an uncanny sense of history and its relevance in the contemporary world. His legacy will live large with all that come into contact with the results of his work.
On behalf of the entire St. Mary's College of Maryland community, our sincere sympathy.

On behalf of the Proctor Library of Flagler College, I wish to convey our sympathy to the family of Dr. Earle Newton. Dr. Newton was always a friend of libraries, and Flagler College was clearly a beneficiary. As his obituary notes, Dr. Newton served as Acting Director of the Flagler College Library in the earliest years of the College. And more recently he donated a good portion of his collection of books on Spanish America to the Library. The students of Flagler College will continue to share in his legacy, and all appreciate Dr. Newton's contribution to learning.

Dear Jo and Toni:
My family and I send our deepest condolances on the loss of our dear friend Earle. We always marveled at the close friendship he had with us but most especially with my father and (after their marriage) my mother. He was my first mentor and certainly encouraged my pursuit of a museum career. However, on a more personal level, it was the decades-long friendship we all had that was, and remains, so important. Earle had a more than interesting life as a historic preservation leader. I was privileged to be involved in some of this as a high school and college student. In many respects he was the last of the individual leaders in our profession.
We send our prayers to you all in this time of loss.

Earle was an important part of my life and career. Arriving as I did, a young art dealer from the sanctuary of London strait into a Vermont night that was utterly black, and deep in snow, I proceeded to have an extraordinary experience that combined warm hospitality with the encounter of his remarkable collection of portraits that filled an adjoining clapboard church. Earl's life work and that of his charming wife have left a permanent imprint. Our love and sympathy to Toni

Dr. Newton was a friend and mentor to me. I learned a lot from him, but realize that I barely scratched the surface of his vast knowledge of history and art. It was an honor and pleasure to have been associated with him, and he will be deeply missed.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this sad time. The newspaper biography showed clearly what a great contributor Earle was to the fields of arts and history. The honors he received are tribute to those contributions. The art collection he donated will be a lasting tribute to his memory. With much love to Jo and Toni. Mary and Greg O’Brien
