Emrett William Groomes

1930 - 2015

GROOMES A celebration of the Life of Emrett William Groomes was held in the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Phoenix, AZ on February 12, 2015 followed by burial at the National Memorial Cemetery in Phoenix, AZ. Born in Madison, Florida March 22, 1930 to the late John H. and Mary S. Groomes, his desires for higher education became an example for his ten siblings who went on to earn numerous college and graduate degrees. He graduated from Edward Waters High School, Tuskegee Institute, NYU and Cornell University. He retired from the USAFR in 1990, as a Lt. Colonel. Emrett was an educator, physical therapist, hospital administrator, prolific entrepreneur, and a loving father. He was a soloist with the Tuskegee Institute Choir and shared his love of music with his children. He relocated to the Phoenix area in 2001. Survivors include his children Emmery and Sakena Groomes; granddaughter, Cataleya Mazink-Groomes; sister, Audrey E. Groomes of San Francisco, CA; brother Eldrige (Michelle) Groomes of Bahrain, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
