Hugh Donohue Obituary

DONOHUE Hugh James Donohue Sr., 77, died peacefully at home on July 10, 2017, in Jacksonville, Fla. Hugh was born and raised in the Bronx, NY. After graduating from St. Ann's Academy where he played basketball for Lou Carnesseca, Hugh attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was a member of the Men's Basketball Team from 1958-1962. He is a member of Dean Smith's first graduating class and his 3rd letterman. Following college, Hugh became a New York City Police Officer, rising to the rank of Detective 2nd grade until 1972, when he fulfilled a lifelong dream working as the Assistant Basketball Coach at the University of Georgia under Ken Rosemond until 1975. After returning to New York, Hugh worked for International Telephone & Telegraph in the security detail of the CEO and continued being involved in basketball as a High School and College Division I official. In 1984, Hugh and his family purchased the Four Corners Restaurant on Franklin Street, in Chapel Hill, NC which they owned and operated until 1989. This special time was most fulfilling for him and his influence was felt by many. Following the sale of the restaurant, Hugh settled in Bronxville, NY and was semi-retired until 2006, when he permanently retired to Jacksonville, FL. He was an avid supporter of the University of North Florida Osprey's Athletic programs. Hugh was preceded in death by his parents, Mary (O'Brien) and Patrick, his younger brother Patrick and his son-in-law Joseph Berlesky. He is survived by his wife of 56 years Mary; children Doreen, Hugh II (Julie), Christopher (Kelly), Catherine (Tiziano Longo); and his brother Kevin (Joan). He was the beloved Big Poppy to seven grandchildren-Tiernan, Austin, Murphy and Christopher Donohue, Bryce Lewis and Massimo and Deegan Longo. He is also survived by eight nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Organization for Disorders of the Corpus Callosum at nodcc.org. The family would like to extend its gratitude to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida. Special thanks to Dr. Streeter, Ashley Nuna and Charelle Holt; your care for Hugh was exceptional. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at Holy Family Catholic Church, 9800 Baymeadows Rd. Jacksonville, Fla., on Monday, July 17th at 11 a.m. The wearing of Carolina Blue is encouraged.

To all of us in the Woodlawn gang of St Barnabas Elementary School juvenile delinquents he was "The Bishop." We were in the first grade together. We lived two blocks away from each other. And of course after college and the other events called "life" we parted, later meeting infrequently at basketball games. My mind remains full of those early Bronx days and Jimmy (or Hughie or The Bishop) is a major source of those fond memories. I am greatly saddened to learn of my dear friend's passing. I take some small comfort that he has been reunited with our mutual long-lost best friend, Frank McArdle.-- Jim Ryan ([email protected])

Hughie Donohue was a great guy who always had a big smile on his face. I grew up in Woodlawn and being much younger watched
From the sidelines as Hughie, Jimmy O'Keefe, Frank McArdle and Tommy Murray would battle it out on the courts. We all learned how to play hard and their were no open layups everything was a hard foul. All the kids in Woodlawn learned how to play and got scholarships because of those guys. Hughie was a gentle giant!

What is Success?

To laugh often and much;

To win the respect of intelligent people
and the affection of children;

To earn the appreciation of honest critics
and endure the betrayal of false friends;

To appreciate beauty;
To find the best in others;

To leave the world a bit better, whether by
a healthy child, a garden patch
or a redeemed social condition;

To know even one life has breathed
easier because you have lived;

This is to have succeeded.

Hughie was indeed a giant in the size of his heart. I was a manager on the UNC basketball team under Coach Frank McGuire and then on Dean Smith's first team with Hugh. He was a delight as a teammate. Even when I last saw him and spoke with him a couple of times at our last UNC "family" reunion, Hugh was as friendly and interested as ever. He did not distinguish between a manager or an All-American in his kindness and treatment of others. We will sadly miss this giant among the Carolina family members. I hope he was able to celebrate our national championship in April. His life as a Carolina player and alum contributed to this success. Thanks, Peppy, for keeping us informed.

My condolences to Mary and the entire Donohue Family. "Hughie" was a giant in so many ways; in particular, in faith, family, and community. I am personally thankful to Hughie and Mary for their generous support of my work. May he rest in peace, and may his spirit live on in his children, grandchildren, and the young kids who aspire to play "ball" at the University of North Carolina, University of North Florida, and in the Catholic High School Athletic Association of New York City. "Keep hoops alive.
