Hugh McGowan Obituary

McGOWAN Hugh (Ted) McGowan, 86, of Ponte Vedra Beach, died Wednesday, November 21, 2001 at St. Lukes Hospital. Ted was born February 10, 1915 in Ridgefield Park, New Jersey to the late Hugh and Mary Starling McGowan. He was a 1938 graduate of the College of William and Mary and was a member of the Presidents Society and the Athletic Hall of Fame. Ted served during World War II in the C.B.I. Theatre with the U.S. Army as a Lt. Colonel. He retired from A.T. & T. where he was an Assistant Vice President. He also worked many years for the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company as Vice President of Operations. Upon retirement, Ted operated and captained his own charter fishing boat for 30 years in Naples, FL where he lived prior to moving to Ponte Vedra Beach 6 years ago. Ted was active in the American Cancer Society campaign, serving as Chairman. He was also active as a referee for many years in both high school and collegiate leagues in the Washington, D.C. area. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church and a resident of Vicars Landing. Family members include his beloved wife, Muriel; daughter, Barbara (Thomas) Cucchiara of New Jersey; brother-in-law, Alfred Vandeweghe of Virginia; grandchildren, Robert Martin, Scott Martin and Christopher Martin and great grandson, Christopher Martin. He was predeceased by his son James Robert McGowan. Memorial services will be held at 4:00 p.m., Saturday, November 24th in the Chapel of Vicars Landing with the Reverend Dr. Jim Cooper, officiating. Burial will be held in the Naples Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Naples, FL. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
