James DeVoe Obituary

DeVOE James DeVoe, Sr. Jim DeVoe, my loving husband of 38 years, arrived in the arms of Jesus on Thursday morning March 23, 2006 when his private plane crashed near Melbourne, Florida. With him in the crash was our beloved son-in-law Steele Gudal, who also lost his life. Words that come to me when I think of JimÑmy best friend, my sweetheart, my greatest supporter, my valued partner. He would hold me, comfort me and pray with me. Our favorite thing to do together was just being together. Jim's greatest attribute was his perseverance. No matter what trial he ever faced, he would never, never quit. He lived by Christian principles and was always striving to improve. He carried a yellow notepad with him at all times, writing out his ideas and his "to do" list, and his list was never ending. He was quiet in crowds, yet he was a bold leader with a clear vision in business. J.D. Byrider was his passion. He loved every person within the organization and truly felt the sense of "family". Most important in his life was his family. He would often tell them that he "loved them more than the whole wide world." Grandchildren were his crowning joy. He had "pet names" for all of them and they all loved "Papa". His strength and love for all of us will last us a lifetime. He will always be in our hearts and we will meet again in heaven in God's time. Jim was born 3-14-43 in Carmel, California. He returned to Indiana as a toddler and lived in Muncie until he moved to Marion, Indiana in 1962. He graduated from Indiana University with honors in 1966 with his B.S. in business finance and management. He graduated with his MBA degree in August 1967. He married "Andy" two days after graduation, August 19, 1968. Jim began his career in business at the Continental Bank in Chicago in their MBA program. He returned to Marion, Indiana to work with his father, Paul DeVoe who owned DeVoe Chevy-Cadillac dealership. He eventually bought the dealership and founded J.D. Byrider, a nationwide franchise. The business began franchising in 1989 and has 123 locations nationwide. Jim was involved in his alumni fraternity Sigma Nu of which he had been a member at I.U. He also had been commander of his fraternity. Jim was Entrepreneur of the Year in Indianapolis in 2000. He was on the board of directors of Little Star School and was on the board of directors of the Alzheimer's Foundation of Indianapolis. He was a member of Central Christian Church in Carmel, Indiana. Family members include his wife, Andy and children Jim Jr., Amy Gudal, Ryan DeVoe, Marcy Miller, Mindy DeVoe, and Angie DeVoe. His father Paul DeVoe preceded him in death. Other family members include his mother, Helen and his sister Judy. Jim DeVoe had 11 grandchildren: Gabrielle Gudal, Gentry Gudal, Haleigh DeVoe, Lukas DeVoe, Tatum DeVoe, Mia Miller, Hannah DeVoe, Crew DeVoe, Barrett DeVoe, Tenly DeVoe, and Elle DeVoe. Visitation will be Thursday, March 30th from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Central Christian Church, 1242 W. 136th St., Carmel, Indiana, 46032, (317) 846-1230. A private memorial service will be held on Friday. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be sent to Little Star Center, 12726 Hamilton Crossing Blvd. or the J.D. Byrider Foundation at 12802 Hamilton Crossing Blvd., Carmel, Indiana 46032. Services under the direction and care of Quinn-Shalz, a Family Funeral Home & Cremation Centre. Dear DeVoe family. There isn't a day that goes by where Mr Devoe doesn't cross my mind. He was such a wonderful man. Comparable to my father Jim. God fearing, loyal to the core. You're all still in my thoughts and prayers. Fondly, Patricia Snyder - Hatfield

Just wanted to let you know that I am praying for you and Amy. I know he meant so much to all. He was very kind to our family and understood what we were facing with a child with autism. He will be missed but know that he is with our savior.

To the Devoe Family,

I am grieving with you during this very difficult time. My brother Michael Beane was the pilot of the plane. I know that all involved in this tragedy are in Heaven with the God.

Jim was the father of my dear friend Amy. He was a devoted and loving family man and I will miss him as a part of the Devoe family.

I remember the first time I saw Jim. It was in a picture that Amy showed me in college. She was snuggling on his lap. She described this sweet relationship with her dad and I was excited to meet this man. Upon meeting me for the first time he was very gracious, kind and made me feel like apart of the family. I could see in his relationship with Andrea and his children how much he loved them. Andy, I pray that God comforts your heart and your family, and holds you close in His tender loving care during this time. All my love and prayers. Karen

My heart aches at the passing of Jim. I have thought of many memories the pass few days that I have of Jim from the 6 years that I worked with him as his personal trainer and they are all good ones.

Andy, I still remember the letter of encouragement you wrote me back in 1985 and how it gave me comfort and how Jim was always ready to go to bat for me. It meant a lot to me. It is my prayer that the love of our Lord Jesus will give you and the rest of the family a peace that can only come from God.

Jim DeVoe's life is testimony that we never know the impact we have on another's life. From what I know from the past and from what I have read this week of this man, this is especially true of him. My father, James Guthrie, was the minister of Westminster Church in Marion. The DeVoes were exceedingly kind to my father and to our family. First Paul, and then Jim also, made sure Dad and our family had a nice car to drive---far nicer than anything we had ever owned. After the first car was only a couple of years old, both men insisted Dad bring it in and trade for a new one, something our family had never experienced. It was a tremendous kindness extended to us, and one I have not forgotten. I am certain such acts of kindness, done behind the scenes, were repeated over and over again in the lives of the DeVoe men. The world is a better place, and now they are reunited in heaven. May God bless your entire family.

I didn't know Mr. Devoe personally, but every time I saw him when he visited Jacksonville, he seemed to always be concerned about the well-being of the people that worked for him. He will be missed by my family and all of his extended "Jacksonville Family". Our thoughts and prayers go out to his Family.

We'll miss you.

We are so sorry for your loss. Mr. Devoe was a wonderful individual. He taught me many things in my years at JDB before I left to begin my family and stay home. Please know your family is in our thoughts and prayers.
