Joan Enos Obituary

ENOS Joan Reid Enos died on Wednesday, April 1, 2015 after deciding not to undergo additional treatment for cancer. Born on September 15, 1932, she had fond childhood memories of summers in East Hampton, LI where her parents Hugh Wallace Reid and Agnes McGuire Reid had their home. After graduating with a degree in nursing from the University of Connecticut, she and her mother took up residence in Greenwich, CT where she had secured a full time position at the Greenwich Hospital, serving on the post-surgery ward. It was there that she met Henry Hulbert Enos, a lifetime resident of Greenwich, who had recently undergone surgery for his ruptured appendix. As the story has been told, young Hank was extremely impressed by the very efficient (and rather striking) woman in the crisply starched white uniform. After he was discharged, Hank would return to the hospital many times entreating nurse Reid to have dinner with him. Embarrassed by his persistence, she ultimately agreed and they shared a meal at the Indian Harbor Yacht Club. Apparently the evening went well enough; the two celebrated the 60th anniversary of their wedding this past December. Joan s career in nursing defined her life. While raising her family of four children, she would continue serving in a variety of capacities at Greenwich Hospital, including heading the department of Home Care and working for Dr. Jack Beatty. After hanging up her white cap, she was in demand as a parent for hire, working from home as a private sitter. Joan was a valued neighbor, a welcoming landlord and an avid gardener. Possessed of two green thumbs, she was notorious for being able to cultivate many a fallen leaf into robust blooming plants. In 1996, Joan and Hank retired to Jacksonville, FL. While in Jacksonville, Joan remained active: she was a needlepoint artist and an avid knitter, she and Hank volunteered at Beaches Hospital, she was one of the regulars at Beverly s Saturday morning exercise class and an active member of the Garden Club of Queens Harbor. It is probably no exaggeration to say that Joan wore out her library card. She adored her husband Hank, with whom she shared a deep love of their four children, Susan E. Smallwood, William H. Enos, Hugh S. Enos, and Joan E. Ornato; eight grand children; and four great-grand children. Her effervescent love of family and friends will be missed by all. Arrangements for a memorial service have not yet been finalized. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to can make a donation in Joan s memory to Northeast Florida Community Hospice, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, FL 32257. So sorry to here about Joannie. Have wonderful memories of Joannie and Hank when I rented their basement apartment in Greenwich, CT. Great times and conversations on their deck over a couple glasses of wine.
