Karl Bredenberg Obituary

BREDENBERG Karl William “Bill” Bredenberg born January 16, 1912 passed away peacefully at his home on June 26, 2007 after a long courageous battle with multiple myeloma. He was born in Buffalo, New York and moved to Jacksonville with his wife, Irene, in 1970. He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Irene; daughter Brita O'Carroll; grandson Tim Peeler (Tina); granddaughter Lisa Boening (Lawrence) and six great grandchildren. Mr. Bredenberg was loved and respected by all who knew him for his kindness, positive and accepting attitude, generosity, intelligence, humor, and many other exceptional qualities. He graduated from the University of Buffalo in 1933 and went to work with the FBI, later transferring to Social Security Administration on its opening day and rose to Deputy Commissioner-Field. During his career, he received many citations for notable achievements and leadership, and was instrumental in the implementation of Medicare. Toward the end of his career he moved to Jacksonville to manage the Social Security office and be near his family and retired here. Following the retirement from Federal service, he served as a consultant to the Health Planning council and several other agencies. Karl was especially proud that he played tennis until he was 94 years old, notably with the "Old Geezers of Baymeadows" for over twenty years, and whose members remained faithful friends for life, often calling him and taking him out for coffee after his illness progressed. He won several local, state, and national tennis championships for men over 80 years. Karl and Irene traveled extensively to every continent, and went to Antarctica for their 50th anniversary. They set an excellent example as marriage partners, parents, professionals, and human beings, supporting many conservation, environmental, and animal groups. The family wants to thank Dr. Mahajan and the staff at Hematology-Oncology Association who was "his other family" for their extraordinary loving care over the ten years of his treatment. They are role models for the kind of care everyone should receive. Contributions may be made to the Jacksonville Symphony or Jacksonville Humane Society or No More Homeless Pets in Mr. Bredenberg's name. Mr. Bredenberg had requested that no services be held. Arrangements under the care of Hardage Giddens Edgewood Chapel at 729 South Edgewood Avenue. Please Sign the Guestbook @ Jacksonville.com
