I am the daughter of Mack Cates, the Manager of the Sears store where Robert worked for as long as I can remember. I tried to reach out to Robert before I moved away from Jacksonville in 2018, and spoke to his daughter on the phone, but I ran out of time to go visit him, which had been my intention. After a friend tagged me on FB with a post about that store, I shared it on my page, with some of my memories of it, and concluded it with the fond tribute to Robert that follows... "I actually credit my own lack of racist views to Dad's friendship with a wonderful Black man Dad employed in the Automotive Center, and who came out to care for our yard on Wednesdays, his day off at the store. He was about Dad's age, and had also grown up in Alabama (I think). Though they might have thrown rocks at each other across the railroad tracks as kids (actual memory Dad recounted of his childhood), they understood and respected each other. Robert Hardaway was a quiet, kind man, who helped me plant my first garden, so I often think of him now that I'm learning to grow my own food (I wish he was still around to advise me!). During times of heavy racial violence in the 60's and 70s, Dad would often turn to Robert for his perspective on what was going on. I remember Dad telling me that there were days when he would go get Robert from his job in the Auto Center, and the two of them would get in his car and drive, sometimes all the way to Atlanta and back. Dad always liked to drive when he had a lot on his mind, but the fact that he often took Robert on these "Thinking trips" with him makes be believe that somehow, these two unlikely friends had a hand in turning the tide of racism in Jacksonville, just by trying to understand each other. Thank you, Robert, for being such a beautiful soul! You taught me much...

I haven’t seen or talked to you in almost 45+ years but I am sad to hear of you passing . You took me under your wings when we worked at Sears Roebuck in the late 1960’s. May you Rest In Peace.
