STEPHEN PROM Obituary

PROM Please Sign the Guestbook @ Jacksonville.com Stephen George Prom, 58, of Jacksonville, Florida, passed away on May 26, 2013, following a year-long battle with cancer. He was born July 8, 1954, in Jacksonville, Florida, to Bonafay (Bonnie) M. Prom and Rev. George W. Prom. He was raised in Jacksonville and graduated from Englewood High School in 1972, the President of his Senior Class. He earned his B.A. degree from the University of Florida, Phi Beta Kappa, with High Honors, and his J.D. degree from the University of Florida College of Law, also with High Honors, Phi Kappa Phi, Order of the Coif, and was his class Valedictorian. He was admitted to The Florida Bar in 1980. Steve devoted his legal career to Jacksonville. He started his practice with the Rogers Towers firm, and was associated with the Foley & Lardner firm before opening his own firm, Christian, Prom, Korn & Zehmer. Steve later joined the firm of Brant, Moore, Macdonald & Wells as a shareholder, and for the last thirteen years has been a shareholder of Akerman Senterfitt. Through the years Steve specialized in corporate law, public finance, and representation of nonprofit corporations, but he ultimately focused his considerable legal talents on the specialty of healthcare law, and he was one of the driving forces for the formation of The Florida Bar's Healthcare Law Section as well as healthcare law specialization. He was a past member of the Board of Governors of the Young Lawyers Section of The Florida Bar. Steve's expertise and knowledge of state and federal healthcare law was renown, and he was a trusted counselor for many of the most prominent individuals and institutions within the Jacksonville and statewide healthcare industries. He was regularly recognized in the area of healthcare law in The Best Lawyers in America and in Florida Trend's Legal Elite. Steve contributed untold hours to numerous charitable organizations, implementing the legal infrastructure and providing leadership as a supporter of many of Jacksonville's charities in the healthcare arena. One of his proudest accomplishments was the success of the non-profit organization We Care Jacksonville, Inc., a coalition of Jacksonville's resources to provide primary and specialty health care to the North Florida area's indigent and uninsured. In his soul Steve was a true waterman. Surfing coursed in his lifeblood from his earliest teens to his last days. Passionate for waves, he travelled the world with his friends mastering its surf with his classic fluid style. Forever generous and unselfish, Steve would freely give the best waves to his buddies. He relished the challenge of competitive sailing equally with the congenial relaxation of simply reaching up and down the river with friends. He was a respected Past Commodore of Epping Forest Yacht Club. Steve excelled at organization and forward thinking, having been a founding member of the Wave Masters Society surf club and later the Jacksonville Sailing Foundation. He was a perennial networker, constantly involving colleagues and friends in the new combinations he conceived and created. He faithfully attended Chets Creek Church with his friends and grandson Joel. Steve loved life, finding good in everything he touched, promoting good will and fostering contagious optimism in all who were blessed with his friendship. Steve was predeceased by his mother but is survived by his father, Rev. George W. Prom, his brother, Marcus J. Prom, his sons and daughter, Aaron J. Prom (Jennifer), Ashley B. Prom, and Adam G. Prom, and his grandson, Joel Rodriguez, for all of whom he was devoted, supportive, and extremely proud. Finally, Steve is survived by his dearest companion, Annmarie Kent-Willette, and by legions of friends. A memorial service celebrating Steve's life will be held at Chets Creek Church, 4420 Hodges Boulevard, Jacksonville, FL, on Friday, May 31, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. His ashes will be interred following a private, family service at Riverside Memorial Park. The family asks that any donations be made to the Stephen G. Prom Memorial Fund, We Care Jacksonville, Inc., 900 University Boulevard North, MC-92, 6th Floor, Jacksonville, FL 32211.

To Steve's family and friends: As another summer approaches, I can't help but think back to the "funtastic" days spent with Steve, Marcus, Mike Perkins, Mike Falabella, Martin Hackley, Joe Lowenthal and so many others! Pat Gilbert used to say we were living our never-ending "Summer of 42." And after taking a deeper dive, I realize that most of it centered around Steve!

He brought us together. He touched a lot of lives---and it was all good. How many times did we hit the waves at Davis St., Access 5 and the Pier? I remember we even surfed the early, dark mornings before school at Access 5 and I was the one lookin' out for sharks. That didn't bother Steve! That said, I know he's catchin' the best waves in Heaven! Steve, you were, and are a bright, shining star. Thanks for the great times (and the terrific rides)!

I will always remember Steve. He was a great sailer. I was a crew on board his sailboat, "Ashley brook". We did many regattas together on St John's river and on the Atlantic Ocean. Had a great time with him. I have taken many photos of our journey together. If any one is interested of a copy of our sailing journey, please call me. Look me up and leave a message. Miss you Steve. Rest in peace, until we meet again. Frank.

Steve recruited me out of the University of Florida. I will never forget when I first started working for his firm he took me to the gym and told me I had to lift my weigh to stay with the firm. I did. Later, he took me running. I could not keep up. Now, 25 years later I am still running because of Steve. Another day at work, the surf was up so he took me to the beach surfing. Steve made a big impact on my life. Cool guy (with a ponytail) and great lawyer. I was thinking of him and just learned through the internet of his passing. I am truly sadden by his passing. See you in heaven brother.

As one of Steve's EHS teachers from years gone by, it is not surprising that he made such an impression and left such positive mark in all his dealings. Too young to leave you all, for sure, but likely needed to be with the Master. Grace and peace to family and friends.

To the family of Stephen,

Not aware of his battle, I was shocked to hear of Stephen's passing. What a great guy. Loved and respected by his peers. I too went to grammer school through high school with Steve. Will forever remember his infectious freckled face smile and fun loving spirit. We have all lost a great man. My prayers are with all of you as I know this is difficult. He is probably already organizing something in heaven!

I am so sorry to hear of Steve's passing. I knew him from high school, but can't say I was a close friend. I had reason to seek legal counsel, several years ago, and was directed to Steve as a possible solution. I was not expecting the caring and warmth with which he tried to help. I wish I had known him better and send my sincerest condolences to his friends and family... I know he will be dearly missed.

Steve truly was a diamond in the rough. A great man of integrity, intelligence, humble, kind hearted and compassionate. He was selfless and would give others the shirt off his back, a stellar person in all regards. I had the pleasure of several local sailing excursions with Steve and loved his energy, enthusiasm, spirit and zest for life. He had a contagious smile that could warm up any room. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family at this most difficult time. Steve, I'm guessing your sailing the heavenly seas or making first tracks in heavenly snow...I know you have a smile on your face. Thinking of you and how much you'll be missed by all the lives you've touched.

I am one of Steve's partners from Tampa. I joined Akerman in 2000 and have known and worked with Steve ever since. He was a friend, and I will miss him.

As I told John Macdonald, Steve's obituary showed what a good man he was. If I were to summarize what I have learned about Steve, it would be that he lived the saying "You do well by doing good."

We have all lost a lot with Steve's passing.

My condolences to all of his family and friends.

My heart has been heavy thinking of something to say that hasn't already been said about Steve. Met in 1969 at Englewood, instant friends, always a gentleman a man of many surprises, so capable to lead and yet make a killer bonfire at the Crossroads back on grad night. I hope the family understands our ramblings about our class president, so important to all of what we were and could be.
I'm sorry, my friend, for a life cut short. I'm grateful for what you accomplished in the same timeframe. Steve, we all loved you. God has you in his arms and I feel comfort in that but I will always miss your smiling eyes.....

They say it is not who you are but how you are remembered that is important. You are the best example of that. Your dad was my pastor. After all these years, I still remember how nice you were to me. You showed me your surf boards and gave me advice. I admired you and followed in your surfing passion. I respected you and that is why I called you just 6 or 7 years ago to ask your opinion because I knew I could trust you. Stephen, you were a leader in your own pleasant way. God Bless you and my prayers and thoughts are with your family today.

Gone, but never to be forgotten.

1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

May God bless this family during these most difficult times?

I was in the graduation class of Englewood in 1972 with Steve. We shared many times together as well as classes at Englewood.

Steve always had a knack for making one feel welcome. When I first started racing sailboats, I would repeatedy re-introduce myself to Steve (and other racers). Finally, Steve, with a chuckle, told me that I really didn't need to continue, everyone knew who I was by then! Steve you will be sorely missed by all the people whose lives you touched. It seems like yesterday I met you and Mike in the surf off Davis St. in 1972. You were such a great friend to so many people; I hope to see you again in heaven one day. God bless you friend.
