Steven Latham Obituary

LATHAM Steven “Steve” T. Latham, 51, passed away Wednesday June 17, 2009 at Orange Park Medical Center. He was born October 5, 1957 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He is survived by his parents, Ben and Isabel Latham of Orange Park, FL; brothers Ben (wife Beth) of Tulsa, OK, John (wife Clare) of Orange Park, FL and Michael (wife Melinda) of Dove Canyon, CA. Steven was the devoted father of Steven Jr. (wife Andrea) of Tallahassee, FL; Lauren-Elizabeth Latham of Tallahassee, FL and Rebekah Latham of Orange Park, FL. Grandfather to Valerie Latham of Tallahassee, FL and uncle to four nieces and three nephews. Steve graduated from Orange Park High School in 1975 and received his Masters degree in Business Administration from Jacksonville University in 1995. He was a leader in the Jaycees and devoted his time to promoting entrepreneurship among the community's' youth. Always the dreamer, he strived to instill the same passion he had for life in everyone he met. Not the type of man to back down from a challenge, Steve believed that anything was possible through persistence, hard work and dedication. He had many callings in life and is remembered for his charitable works as a devout parishioner of Grace Episcopal Church and served as interim Senior Warden. He was chairman of the Clay County Habitat for Humanity, helping the organization grow into one of the largest Habitat for Humanity programs in the country. He worked as a real estate broker and property manager for over 20 years and received numerous awards from the real estate industry. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday June 21, 2009 at the Jacksonville Memory Gardens Funeral Home, 111 Blanding Blvd, Orange Park, FL. The funeral and service of Holy Eucharist will be held on Monday, June 22, 2009 at 11:00am at Grace Episcopal Church, 245 Kingsley Avenue, Orange Park, FL, the Rev. Kurt H. Dunkle presiding and the Rev. Celeste Tisdelle, assisting. A reception will immediately follow at the church. Please Sign the Guestbook @ Jacksonville.com

Having just heard the sad news, I am speechless and heartbroken. Steve always found the brighter side of everything. Always calm and collected, it was a pleasure being in his study and travel group whilst pursuing our Masters at JU.A lifelong friend even if you had just met him. My deepest sympathies on your loss, a loss for all of us. My thoughts and prayers are with all
the family today and always.

My husband and I both knew Steve at OPHS and are so sad to hear of his passing. I'll always remember loudly singing along to Doobie Brothers songs after lunch at Long John Silvers. I'll miss him.

Dear Latham Family,

I just wanted to drop a note to tell your family you are all in my prayers, and in my heart as you go through this valley of loosing such a wonderful person.
Steve and I went to High School together, and it sounds like his life after High school was as busy and purpose filled as it was in High school. He was such an asset always in all he did.
I am sad for your loss and I will continue to lift up your family to the Lord for strength and courage during this sad time.
In Jesus Love,
Deborah (Debbie) Bearden Showalter

I was deeply saddened to read about Steve's death. Although only 3 years older than Steve, I was his Professor at JU during his years there. He later worked for me and my wife as a buyer's agent. I always held Steve in the highest regard and we are all worse off with his passing. My prayers are with you and we can seek comfort in knowing he is cradled in God's loving hands.

Ben and Isabel, I was shocked to hear about your loss. I had not seen Steve for some time. Our last contact involved his Habitat work and I greatly respected him for that effort. My condolences to you and your extended family.

I remember Steve fondly from school. He always had a huge grin on his face and a quick joke to tell. He was a delight to be around and I know he will be very missed by everyone who knew him. The community has lost a productive and inspriational individual. My prayers are with his entire family in such a great time of loss. God Bless.

Please accept my deepest sympathy in the loss of Steve. I remember Steve when he was a student at Orange Park High School. He was always in the middle of what was going on and always had a smile to share with everyone. As a teacher you do not always remember all the students who passed through the school, but there was no way to forget Steve.
Many years later he sold me my house. He still had that smile and ability to win you over.
May God give all of you His strength to get you through this difficult time.
