My mom Dorothy Sheppard better known as "Grandma" worked at Ted's Sonny's on Lane Ave for 15 years. I wanted to say to the family how sorry we are and that my mom thought the world of Ted and his whole family. Thank you for always being there for my mom. You are in our prayers always.

Wanda,I was so sorry to hear about your loss I just can't find the words. You know that your whole family is special to me. There are miles between us but if you need anything in Tennessee just let me know. It is nice to meet people that make you feel like a better person yourself, and that is just what the Hires family did for me. If I weren't afraid to drive by myself I would visit, I guess I'll just wait until you come to Newport. Hello to the boys and I love you all. Big hugs all.

Dear Wanda and family,
We cannot put into words our heartache over losing Ted. He was a complete stranger to us in 1994 when he reached out to us after the murder of our son, Ryan. Ted offered us help and hope, and we will never forget it. The only peace we can find in this loss, is that Ted is with Jesus and Tina. Imagine their reunion!

We all must step into the shoes of Ted Hires and become proactive in keeping justice a priority in Jacksonville and also to be there for the victims of crimes in our area....Ted Hires was a hero to Jacksonville. Heaven's gain, Jacksonville's loss.

Ted Hires---A Hero To Crime Victims
Having worked for Ted Hires for 5 years, I can say that I have never seen a Victim Advocate with more compassion and passion than what I witnessed Ted Hires show towards victims and their families. Ted believed that only by getting involved and taking action, could one make a difference in the growing crime rate in Jacksonville. Not only did Ted believe this but the actions that he displayed on a daily basis showed these hurting families that someone truly was on their side. Ted continually went above and beyond the role of Victim Advocate even if it meant reaching in to his own pocket. I have seen him help out with funeral expenses, donate to reward funds for unsolved murders, pay for motel rooms because a victim or a witness was still in danger and pay to have a young murder victim's car cleaned before it was returned to the family so they would not have to see the evidence of their son's murder.
Crime victims in Jacksonville lost a true Hero today but Ted, your legacy will live on and we will follow in your footsteps from this day forward!

Ted was a fine upstanding man. A fine leader and a human being with a huge heart for helping others. His involvement with this community will certainly remain for a long, long time to come! Not only those that he uplifted in a time of need, but all of us that had the honor of knowing Ted and working side-by-side with him on a day-to-day basis. You will be missed, my friend!!! My daughter and I were unable to attend the services of Mr. Hires. However, I know he was loved dearly and will be truly missed by all that he has touched. I had to ask God for Guidance so that I may say the right things to you all in your hour of need. This is my prayer for and to you all:
Please help them in this time of loss of Mr. Hires. Lord, help them to not be FROZEN with overwelming grief. Help them to understand why their life is filled with this pain and heartache. But, let them turn their eyes to you as they seek to find strength to trust your faithfulness. You, Lord are a God of comfort and love and I ask you to help them to patiently wait on you and not to despair; Just quietly and peacefully wait for your SALVATION.
I know that that their hearts are crushed, but I know that you will not abandon them forever. Please show them your COMPASSION, Lord. Help them through the pain so that they will hope in you again.
Lord, we believe the promise in your Word to send us fresh Mercy each day. Though we can't see past today, We trust your love will never fail us.
Jesus, You can heal the brokenhearted and their hearts are broken today Lord, and only you can heal their sorrows over losing Mr. Hires.

While I was in college in 1995, I had a gun pulled to my head while in a restaurant drive through. Fortunately, the gunman didn't pull the trigger and the police were able to apprehend the suspect shortly after the incident occurred. Since it came down to the suspect's word versus mine, the state had dropped the charges down to Improper Display of a firearm, even though the police found a loaded gun under the suspect's driver seat.
Feeling angry over the injustice that I was experiencing, I wanted something to be done but didn't know where to turn to. When I saw a copy of the Victim's Advocate, I called Mr. Hires immediately.
He invited me to his office on Lane Ave., and sat and listened to my whole story. He shared with me the tragedies he and your family had faced, and explained how they led him to help be the voice for so many of the unheard. A true Victim's Advocate.
I was shocked when he picked up the phone and began dialing the State Attorney's office, and actually got him on the phone. After some brief discussion about my case, Mr. Hires was able to convince the State Attorney (in his own special way) to have the misdemeanor charges raised to felony ones.
His support did not end there though. He knew I didn't have any family in town and that I was pretty scared to go to court to face the person who threatened my life, so he insisted that he go to court with me. It was one of the most generous gestures of support that anyone has ever given me, and I will remember it for the rest of my life.
Whether he ever knew it or not, Mr. Hires helped inspire me to choose a career working with at-risk youth. He taught me how one person can really make a difference in a another's life if they cared enough, and that the role of an advocate can be invaluable for someone who is in need.
He will be sorely missed by our community and the countless families he helped, and I pray that his legacy lives long. Please accept my deepest condolences for your tragic loss.

The justice coalition was there for me at a hard time in my life and I appreciate the time and compassion that was given. I hope the legacy continues as many people in the Jacksonville community do not feel like there was justice until this wonderful organization was established.

Ted was a very special person, a man of character and integrity, a man who was not afraid to speak the truth and take the criticism from those who opposed what he had to say. He was also a close friend and a man that I admired in so many ways. I especially admired his love for his wife and family, Wanda was the light of his life. He inspired me and Eric to "make a difference" when he formed the "Justice Coalition. I'll never forget the night we met him at the Cecil Field gathering in 1995 and he pinned him Justice Coalition button on my jacket when I stated I would be his "best volunteer." We have alway been so proud to be associated with the Coalition and felt the love and kindess of everyone involved. God surely has a "special place " for such a wonderful person.
