Thomas Hayes Moore

MOORE Captain Thomas Hayes Moore, USN (Ret), died June 5th 2004, at Flagler Hospital in St. Augustine, FL. He was 85 years old. Born June 12th, 1918 in Fork, SC, the eighth of eight children of John William and Bertha Hayes Moore, he grew up in Lake View, SC. Tom received his bachelors degree from Roanoke College in Salem VA and studied Economics at Duke University prior to joining the US Navy in 1941. His 31 years of Naval service were dedicated to the pursuit of his love of flying. During World War II he was a fighter pilot in the Pacific Theater, flying F4F “Wildcats” in Guadalcanal and F6F “Hellcats” off the USS YORKTOWN. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and two Air medals. After the war he was stationed in Florida, Illinois, Virginia, Texas, Washington State, Japan, Washington DC, Italy, and Puerto Rico. He acc! umulated 4667 hours of flight time in propeller and jet aircraft. He retired in Puerto Rico in 1973 as Chief of Staff, Commander Caribbe an Sea Frontier. After retirement he worked as an advisor to the Puerto Rican Economic Development Office (FOMENTO). In 1982, after the death of his wife, Mary, he retired to St Augustine to take care of his mother-in-law, Consuelo Candamio. He was active in local organizations and was a member of the Rotary Club, Quiet Birdmen, and St Augustine Officers Club. Captain Moore was predeceased by his wife of 34 years Mary Garcia of Jacksonville FL, and his wife of 19 years Maria Acebal of St Augustine FL. He is survived by his son and daughter in law; Thomas and Jennifer Moore of Princeville HI, his son and daughter in law; CAPT Michael and Carol Moore of Virginia Beach VA, two step-sons, Jack Acebal and Eduardo Acebal, and two grandchildren, David and Steven Moore. Funeral services will be held 11 AM Wednesday at Craig Funeral Home Chapel, Reverend John Snyder, retired Bishop Diocese of St Augustine. Visitation will be held 5-7 PM Tuesday at Craig Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in S an Lorenzo Cemetery.
