STEVEN GEHRINGER Obituary

Steven D. Gehringer, 76, of Bellefonte, passed away on Sunday, March 31, 2024, after a five-and-a-half-year battle with lymphoma. Steve was born in Reading on September 12, 1947, to the late Kenneth and June (Eschleman) Gehringer.
He is survived by his wife, Linda C. Gehringer; two children, Matthew C. Gehringer (Melanie) of Blossburg and Melissa J. Maiers (Joseph) of Pittsburgh; five grandchildren, Tyler, Joseph, Elias, Aerilyn and Matthew and two brothers, Scott of Calgary, Alberta and Mitchell of Gambrills, Md.
Steve graduated from Reading High School in 1965, received a BA in Business Logistics from the Pennsylvania State University in 1969 and an MBA in 1971. He also returned to Penn State and earned an MS in Wildlife Management in 1978. He was employed by the Pennsylvania Game Commission in 1977 and served as a Game Warden for 20 years in eastern Tioga County. He received a promotion in 1997 and served as Land Manager Supervisor in Potter and Tioga Counties until he retired in 2007. He always said this was the best job - creating wildlife habitats on State Game Lands and other public lands.
Steve enjoyed family trips to Ocean City, N.J. and Outer Banks, N.C. He also enjoyed fishing trips to Canada and several cruises with close friends. He maintained very close relationships of close to 60 years with many brothers of the Tau Phi Delta Fraternity. One of his greatest enjoyments was annual hunting trips to the Black Hills in Wyoming. Some of the best times were sitting around the campfire at night telling and embellishing stories of the day's hunts. Steve also belonged to a local hunting camp, Camp Hit or Miss, where he was a member since 1970. He enjoyed native brook trout fishing, hiking and rabbit hunting with his beagles and other camp members.
A celebration of Steve's life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Steve's honor to The Leukemia And Lymphoma Society or the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center 5115 Centre Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15232.
An online guestbook may be signed, and condolences left for the family at www.hakygeorgianafh.com.

I'm sorry to hear of Steve's passing. My condolences to family and friends.
I was one of Steve's deputies in Tioga County in the mid-80's and enjoyed our time together. He was my first contact with the PGC to becoming a WCO and I retired as a WCO in 2015. Steve had a good sense of humor which was important while working together. I remember walking miles out of SGL after getting stuck in the ice/snow only to find out later he hadn't locked in the 4 wheel drive which quickly got us out (with additional witnesses). The added benefit was his figure skating move of stepping on ice, twirling several times in a circle with arms outstretched before landing on his back. I also told him that being able to eat a Big Mac with one hand while driving and stocking pheasants and not get anything on his uniform would be my inspiration to becoming a WCO. It worked. Rest in peace.
