Lucy Mantz Obituary

Lucy A. Mantz

Lucy A. Mantz, 96, a lifelong resident of Nesquehoning, passed into eternal rest on Jan. 3, 2026, in her home. She was the wife of the late Joseph P. Mantz, who had died in 2009.

Born in Nesquehoning, she was a daughter of the late Alex and Teresa (Ouly) Ficocelli. She was a caretaker for members of her family in their later years.

An active community presence, Lucy was a member of the former Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in the New Columbus section of Nesquehoning, where she served as organist and choir director and formed the 1st Young Girls Choir and taught them to sing in English, Latin and Italian. She was in charge of the roses for many years at the Saint Therese celebration at what is now known as The Shrine of St. Therese of Lisieux. Lucy is depicted as St. Cecilia (the patroness of music) on one of the large stained glass windows in the church.

She also served as organist and choir director of the former Sacred Heart Parish in Nesquehoning. She also served as a past president of the Daughters of Mary of the Panther Valley; was a charter member and past president of the Nesquehoning Woman's Club; and also volunteered for the American Cancer Society.

She was a current member of the St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church of the Panther Valley in Summit Hill.

A graduate of the former Nesquehoning High School, she was employed at Taub's Jewelers in Lansford, where she worked her way up from clerk to manager to owner until retiring.

One of six children, she is survived by one sister, Louise Donahue, and husband, Patrick, of Clementon; her godchildren, Patrick, Teresa, Maria and Tom; nephews, Joseph and Michael; and nieces and nephews.

Her obituary says she was "employed" by Taub Jewelers. Lucy went from employee to part of the family very quickly. I was just a little girl when I met her (my father owned the jewelry store) and Lucy was just the kindest, happiest person I ever knew. I remember best her baking us dozens and dozens of cookies at Christmas....she was a very special person and those of you who continued to know her were very lucky.

I fondly remember Lucy as the organist and choir director. She did a great job in forming the choir at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. I started singing in the choir in the 5th grade. She was instrumental in learning to sing in parts, soprano and alto. She instilled in us a love of the Lord through music. Rest in peace, Lucy

Lucy was such an influence on so many of us growing up in New Columbus. She shared her love of music and taught us the RIGHT way to breathe while singing those beautiful hymns. I still prefer singing my prayers today.

I was a part of the choir that Lucy formed at Our Lady of Mt Carmel Church along with my sister and many friends that lived in New Columbus.
Lucy was an excellent organist and instructor and taught us to sing in harmony correctly grouping us according to our ability as altos and sopranos. Through all the instruction, she also taught us to appreciate the beauty of the celebration of the Mass through music.
Beyond instructing the choir, Lucy took the time to get to know us on a personal level often having gatherings for us at her home. She has given me many happy memories of that time in my life. She was a great teacher and friend.
